Once again, Captain America has saved the day. But instead of assembling his fellow Avengers, the real-life superhero Chris Evans has called on his diehard fan base of 11.9 million Twitter followers to help take down a little-known atrocity happening on American soil.
Evans retweeted a Daily Beast article about a U.S. policy that is stripping citizenship from the children of LGBT Americans, slamming the practice revealed by the report. “Take a minute to read this,” Evans’ tweet read. “It’s maddening. We are regressing.”

The Daily Beast article, “Trump Administration to LGBT Couples: Your ‘Out of Wedlock’ Kids Aren’t Citizens,” investigates the impact of a new rule, unilaterally passed by the State Department, that has changed the interpretation of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). These changes have, in turn, impacted the eligibility of U.S. birthright citizenship for children of LGBT Americans.
Under this new interpretation, LGBT couples who have had children born abroad through assisted reproductive technology, one of the few ways LGBT couples can have biological children, are considered to be born “out of wedlock.” Whether or not the same-sex couples are legally married, their children born abroad face “legal and logistical hurdles” to obtaining birthright citizenship. Journalist Scott Bixby features a same-sex couple who has fallen victim to this new policy, whose child is at risk of being stateless, or even deported.
Incredibly grateful for the readers who shared this piece, for the support @JFKucinich gave me to report it the right way, and, most of all, for the parents who trusted me to tell their stories about how a terrible policy is hurting their kids. https://t.co/8ZqUhGQXJS— Scott Bixby (@scottbix) May 16, 2019
On May 15, Evans saw the story online and shared it with his 11.9 million followers, urging them to read the story and calling the issue “maddening.”
Now, Avenger’s fans online are praising the Captain America actor for saving the day, both onscreen and off, by using his real-life super power — his platform — to stand up for the LGBTQ community.
“Thank you so much for using your platform to speak out!!,” one Twitter user wrote. “lgbt people around the world love u.”
Another user replied, “Thank you for using your platform to share real issues. Cap in real life.”
Other Avenger’s fans called on the Evans to save the day, simply tweeting, “Save us cap.”
Another user added, “The Avengers need to assemble to take down our corrupt Goverment!!!”
The Captain America actor has become known for being outspoken about political issues on Twitter, even starting a Twitter feud with Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. The actor also announced his plans to launch a website called A Starting Point, with a mission “to create informed, responsible and empathetic citizens.” His boldness in speaking out comes during a time when celebrities are earning both praise and criticism for openly expressing their views to their massive fanbases.
However, one Twitter user took down Evans’ critics by pointing out the previous occupation of America’s sitting president.
“Isn’t it weird how the people who say Chris Evans shouldn’t speak up because he’s a celebrity are mostly the same people who voted to make a game show host the president?” one user tweeted. “Sad weird, not interesting weird.”
To that, many Avenger’s fans offered a simple solution: a campaign for Captain America to run for president.
