Chris Evans Might Return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

We hate to watch him go, but we love to watch him leave.

When Chris Evans and his character Captain America (aka Steve Rogers, aka "America's Ass") departed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) at the end of 2019's Avengers: Endgame, the feeling was bittersweet. On one hand, Evans had been a part of the franchise since 2011, when Captain America: The First Avenger premiered and so deserved a worthy sendoff, which Cap received. On the other hand, fans had grown to love Evans' portrayal of the character and would miss seeing the actor carrying the shield. While Evans departure from the series seemed permanent at the time, however, that just might not be the case.

In a profile in GQ, published on Sept. 19, 2023, Evans was asked if he'd ever go back to act in a Marvel film, presumably reprising his role as Captain America. "Yeah, maybe," Evans responds. “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience."

However, Evans' return to the franchise comes with a few caveats. "I’m also very precious with it," he adds. "It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing."

What's the timeline on Evans' return? "No time soon," according to him, but that's not surprising given the MCU's busy upcoming slate. The Marvels arrives in theaters on Nov. 10, 2023 with Deadpool 3Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts all scheduled for 2024 (although as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes continue those dates are likely to change.)

Given how hush-hush Marvel is, if Evans did have a cameo in the upcoming Captain America film, it's unlikely he'd tell the press about it. With several lackluster box office performances since Endgame, moreover, it wouldn't be surprising if the MCU, like its Star Wars counterpart, started rehiring the original actors to make appearances in new films and TV shows. If they learned anything from Spider-Man: No Way Home or The Force Awakens, it's that nostalgia sells.

In the meantime, you can catch Chris Evans (and America's Ass) in Pain Hustlers along with Emily Blunt in select theaters on Oct. 20 and on Netflix Oct. 27.
