  • Chris Christie paid a visit to Ukraine and met with President Zelenskyy.

  • He presented the president with handwritten lyrics to Bon Jovi's "It's My Life."

  • The song apparently served as an inspirational anthem to the people of Odessa during the invasion.

The last time Chris Christie put himself forward as a presidential candidate, Jeb Bush was the presumed Republican frontrunner, reality star Donald Trump was seen as a debate stage sideshow, and Christie himself was hampered by a bridge closure scandal.

He enters the presidential race now in a far, far different world, and how he defines himself as a candidate will require careful recalibration. But one part of his brand has already emerged in this early part of his campaign, and it's precisely the one you'd expect:

He is a Jersey guy.

In fact, he is perhaps the Jersey guy.

He is, in fact, so much a Jersey guy that when his trip to war-torn Ukraine allowed him to present a gift to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Christie chose handwritten lyrics to Bon Jovi's "It's My Life" as his gift.

Now, to be clear, Christie wasn't just picking lyrics from a New Jersey-born songwriter simply because they're from Jersey (if that's the way you're going, the obvious answer is "Time 4 Sum Aksion" off of Newark's own Redman's second record, Whut? Thee Album).

Christie told CNN that the Bon Jovi track reportedly "served as an inspiration for a lot of the citizens in Odessa, as they were preparing for the invasion by the Russians."

Christie also noted that Bon Jovi himself "wrote it out in his own hand, got it framed, and I brought it to President Zelenskyy … and said that this is representative of many of the American people and what they feel about the cause that’s being fought for in Ukraine."

Now, would anyone have predicted that the lead single off of Bon Jovi's 2000 comeback album Crush would serve as the "St. Crispin's Day" speech for a moment in history that the Council on Foreign Relations has called "the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II"?

Not a chance, but here we are. The new "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers" is now officially "My heart is like an open highway, like Frankie said, 'I did it my way.'"

As for how Russia will counter Ukraine receiving this symbolic song-lyric gift, it's possible that longtime Russia advocate Steven Seagal could present Putin with the lyrics to his 2005 single "Girl, It's Alright" from his debut album Songs from the Crystal Cave. That could very well be the morale boost the nation needs.
