Chocolate Lilac Hair Is a Trending Take on Purple

With summer squarely behind us, it's time to get a bit darker — with your hair color, that is. Sure, you can wear any hue all year round, but there is something about browns, blacks, and deep reds that are so suited to the cooler weather. But we get it: you're extra. You love color and want to play, but you would also like something a little more season-appropriate. Well, be glad because the internet's got something for you: Chocolate Lilac Hair.

The shade looks just like it sounds; a combination of a deep brown chocolate base color and a floral-inspired purple. According to Tiare Kupenga, stylist at Vivo Hair and Skin Clinic in New Zealand, the look's versatility makes it the perfect fit for fall.

"Chocolate Lilac hair is a perfect mix. It's not too high fashion, not too plain. In the sunlight, it'll shine vibrant purple, and indoors it'll look violet brown," says Kupenga.

She creates the custom shade using a balayage technique to paint the hair, starting near the roots. For one client pictured above, Kupenga took the brown roots two shades darker and blended purple from the roots to the ends for a chocolate lilac masterpiece.

When we asked who chocolate lilac hair would work best for, Kupenga gives an honest answer: "everyone."

Your hair could be long, short, textured, or fine — a good colorist will customize the shade so you get a perfect mix of purple and brown. We all need a way to brighten up this season, and chocolate lilac is one surefire way to make your fall even more colorful.
