Is Black Friday a good time to buy a new mattress?

Definitely, especially "if you do your research well," says Chris Tomshack, DC, CEO of Healthsource, a chiropractic clinic. (If you're reading this article, that means you're one step ahead!) During the holidays, there are usually bigger sales and discounts available in comparison with the earlier months of the year. So, you can potentially save lots of money.

How to pick the best mattress for you, per chiropractors

There are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a new mattress, chiropractors say.

Your Sleeping Position

You'll want to invest in a mattress that works best for your preferred sleeping position, whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach. "Your mattress plays a significant role in your quality of sleep as well as your overall comfort each night," says Tomshack.

He recommends a mattress with medium firmness for back sleepers because it'll balance and support for the spine. They should also be soft enough to reduce pressure on the hips, Cavanaugh adds. Side sleepers should opt for a more conforming, softer mattress to support the hips and shoulders, since that's where most of the weight holds when sleeping.

For stomach sleepers, look for a firm mattress that will cushion spinal alignment and prevent the spine and hips from sinking down, Tomshack and Cavanaugh say. "Sleeping on a mattress in a position that is not supported properly will lead to painful side effects due to the excess pressure placed on certain body parts," Cavanaugh explains.

Materials

Yup, you'll want to research info about mattress materials, and there are three main types to pay attention to: innerspring, memory foam, and latex mattresses. (There are also hybrids that combine these materials, Tomshack says.)

  • Innerspring Mattress: These mattresses are "known for their responsiveness and suit a wide range of sleep styles," Tomshack says. They're easy to get in and leave, and work best for those who move a lot when they sleep.

  • Memory Foam Mattress: A memory foam mattress will conform to your body and maybe make you feel like you're being hugged as you sleep. "They’re excellent at relieving joint pain and providing spinal support, but they can also retain heat," so if you run cold, this might be a great option, Tomshack says.

  • Latex Mattress: If you want a mix of comfort and support, latex is the way to go. It does a great job of "combining the buoyant support of innerspring with the contouring ability of memory foam, without the 'sinking-in' feeling," Tomshack says. It also has great airflow and cooling properties, if you're a hot sleeper.

Size

Think about the best size for your bedroom and the number of sleepers—including a partner, kids, or a pet, Tomshack says. For instance, he recommends a king-sized bed (76 x 80 inches) for couples with just over three feet of space for both sleepers. "It’s an excellent option if one partner tends to be a restless or active sleeper, as it allows you to move around comfortably without disturbing your partner," he says.

Quality

Your mattress is an investment, so you should be focused on a high-quality one, first and foremost, Tomshack says. "Getting enough healthy, restorative sleep is crucial to maintaining a healthy quality of life," he says. "You need a quality mattress to ensure you get the best possible sleep. However, not all mattresses are created equal."

I hate to break it to you, but a compressed foam mattress that comes stuffed in a box probably isn't as durable as other mattresses. Therefore, you might have to replace them more frequently and spend more money over time. "On the other hand, investing in a high-quality mattress made with premium materials and delivered by hand may cost more, but it will last longer, perform better, and provide years of quality rest," he explains.

Cavanaugh says one of the most common problems he hears from patients with chronic pain is that they have trouble sleeping. "Your body heals and repairs itself while you sleep. So, if you are not sleeping, you’re not healing," he says. Remember, this investment is super important for your health!

After-Sales Service

Consider the delivery, exchange, and return process, as well as the mattress brand's home trial and warranty info. Make sure to read all of the fine print, Cavanaugh says.

Delivery

Some companies offer white glove delivery, where someone will deliver and set up your bed, and even remove your old mattress. For some brands this is free, but some companies charge an extra fee. If you're looking for a bed in a box, those companies usually ship their mattresses for free, but you have to set it up yourself, Tomshack says. One more thing: Beds can get really heavy—a queen mattress can weigh more than 90 pounds, he says, so it might be a good idea to have extra help with the delivery process.

Home Trial Period

"Most mattress companies, whether online or retail, will give you a home trial, as it takes time for your body to adjust to a new mattress," Tomshack says. Most home trials can last between 90 to 180 days, but some brands ask you to sleep on the mattress for a minimum number of days, usually 30, before returning it, he adds.

Returns

Again, do your research, but if you find that your mattress isn't a fit, you should be able to exchange or return it for little to no charge, Tomshack says. However, some companies might only accept it if it's in near-perfect condition, and will charge you for anything considered "damage."

Warranty

"Just like any other big-ticket item, a mattress should come with a generous warranty that lasts for at least 10 years," Tomshack says. While warranties usually don't cover normal wear and tear, they should cover sagging from a manufacturing defect. When shopping, take note of what conditions might invalidate your warranty, like a stain.

Which of these mattress brands do chiropractors prefer?

Each chiropractor has different preferences, but the experts WH spoke with recommended the following:

  • Casper: Casper sells both memory foam and hybrid mattresses, recommended by Gilbert Miranda, DC, a chiropractor at Maples Chiropractic in Winnipeg. "Memory foam helps to relieve pressure points and reduce pain in sensitive areas along the hips, shoulders, and back," he says. "It also helps distribute your weight and keeps your spine aligned in all sleep positions."

  • Saatva: Saatva has a ton of high-quality mattresses to choose from, recommended by Tomshack. An example: their Saatva Classic Mattress. "This incredibly popular, award-winning mattress offers multi-layer, hybrid support, eco-responsible material construction," he says. "This particular mattress serves the needs of many different sleepers because it comes in three comfort levels and two height options."

  • Amerisleep: "They are very eco-friendly, so if you have allergies or are sensitive to VOCs [volatile organic compounds], this is the mattress for you," says Cavanaugh.

  • Sleep Number: Sleep Number offers quite a discount at 50 percent off on some of their smart beds, one of which is the Sleep Number 360 iLe Limited Edition Smart Bed. "This mattress is highly supportive, yet plush enough to provide comfort," says Cavanaugh. "It also is made with a ceramic gel layer to help release excess heat to promote a more comfortable and restful night’s sleep."
