Ahead of the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana's death, we're resurfacing this story explaining the significance of the memorial statue of the late Princess at Kensington Palace.

Yesterday, July 1, 2021, marked what would have been Princess Diana's 60th birthday, and the royal family marked the occasion with the much-anticipated debut of her statue at Kensington Palace. The statue depicts Diana with her arms around two children, with a third visible in the background, which may lead royal fans to wonder about the identity of these children.

In a statement, the Palace said that the decision to include children in the statue was a way of honoring Diana's special ability to bond with young people. "The statue aims to reflect the warmth, elegance and energy of Diana, Princess of Wales, in addition to her work and the impact she had on so many people," reads the statement. "The figure of Diana, Princess of Wales is surrounded by three children who represent the universality and generational impact of The Princess' work. The portrait and style of dress was based on the final period of her life as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes and aims to convey her character and compassion."

Diana worked closely with many youth-oriented charities, and was a patron of Greater Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London. The Diana Award, which was established in 1999, specifically honors young people who work to improve the lives of others. The charity was founded to honor Diana's "belief that young people have the power to change the world."

Prince Harry and Prince William reunited for the first time in months to unveil the statue of their late mother, at a small ceremony that was also attended by Diana's siblings: Earl Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and Lady Jane Fellowes. The brothers had reportedly been planning this unveiling for almost four years, ever since the 20th anniversary of Diana's death in 2017.
