Chicken Farmer Finds the Best Way to 'Regift' Unwanted Holiday Fruitcake

The tradition of holiday fruitcakes supposedly dates back to Roman times, but even today, people continue to make jokes about this liquor-soaked cake. Now that I've thought about it--I've never even seen a fruitcake in real life! Even so, I know that they're infamously terrible, indigestible, and are often thrown out.

That doesn't mean they're useless, though! There are plenty of people who still like fruitcakes out in the world, but one Vermont farmer found another creative solution. The owner of Gold Shaw Farm shared his solution in a December 22 TikTok video, and people are raving over his creativity. Take a look at his regifting strategy!

LMAO! This was actually a very smart move on his end, though let's hope his well-meaning neighbor who gifted him the fruitcake doesn't see this video. Even though holiday fruitcake is somewhat of a joke during Christmastime, it would be terrible if she took it the wrong way. On the other hand, though--someone really enjoyed the fruitcake, and I'd feel honored if that were my gift!

While commenters loved to see the happy flock of backyard chickens, a shocking number of people chimed in in defense of fruitcake. Viewer @mollys_vintage_finds shared, "I like fruit cake. Something is wrong with me. It is good when it has rum." OK, OK, I'll admit--the liquor part does sound good! Even the candied fruits and the spice cake sound delicious on their own, but when combined together into a dry, dense block? Not so much. Luckily enough, the hungry chickens disagree.

Chickens Regularly Enjoy Fruits and Grains in their Daily Diet

Fruitcake is actually a pretty fantastic treat for a  backyard chickens, especially since all of its ingredients are safe and nutritious for chickens. Fruits--even dried ones--and carbs like cake are both parts of their diet, though it's worth keeping an eye on a bird's sugar intake.

Here's the catch: like with many pets, your chickens' treats shouldn't exceed more than ten percent of their total daily diet. Whether that whole ten percent is a shared fruitcake snack like in this video or some scraps spread out throughout the day is up to you, as long as you don't overdo the excess treats.

As creative as @goldshawfarm's fruitcake regifting is, it's important to remember that not all animals can safely eat this wintertime "treat." Just like the farmer said, grapes and raisins are not safe for dogs! Cats should avoid these fruits, too, as well as citrus fruits like oranges and lemons. Chickens, though? They can enjoy fruitcake like it's Christmas all year-round!
