Please tell us a bit about you, your Cuban family, your career

I am Cuban American, my father arrived from Cuba at the age of nine, all alone and was in an orphanage in the United States while he was able to reunite with his family. My grandparents arrived 10 months later and then they all settled in North Carolina, where they lived and where much later he met my mother who is American.

I have always lived a multicultural life and in States like North and South Carolina there were not many Hispanic people then, but I spent a lot of time in Florida surrounded by my Cuban culture, speaking Spanish and enjoying Cuban dishes.

My great aunt was a hairdresser and I loved going to work with her and learning all her secrets, helping her clean and seeing how she cut and dried hair. That's how I fell in love with Latin hair and our curly, abundant manes. This is how I learnt to start loving my job.

From your experience with your great aunt, what followed in the path of the hair industry to finally get to Aveda?

The answer is education. The more education you receive, the more you understand about hair, about the right products, and what your client wants and needs. The easiest thing is to keep in mind that there are two types of products: those used to give volume or structure to the hair and those based on oil to give shine, control volume and tame it. You have to understand who needs what.

Your hair and mine are diverse, Alicia's or Patricia's are diverse and everyone needs their own care and styling routine. Once you understand this you can manage any type of hair.

What do Latinas need to achieve their ideal hair?

First of all they need to take care of their scalp and learn to moisturize their hair. It is as vital as drinking water to maintain yourself. With greater hydration, your hair will shine more and be healthier. And finally, you must always protect it from excessive heat.

What would be the key ingredients to keep in mind?

At Aveda we use silicone-free products, which have castor seeds as an ingredient that does not weigh down the hair and will give it the texture and shine that we all dream of.

Let's talk about Latin pride and how you reflect it in your career and your daily life

I inherited my family's determination to succeed and build a future in this country. I want to repay them for their efforts and the best way is to celebrate myself, to inspire that confidence in others so that they can wear their hair with pride, so that they can show off their curls if they have them or their long, lustrous hair. Your inner beauty will emerge on the
