Truman Capote, the American novelist known for such seminal works as Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood, was also quite the host: His most notable party was the iconic Black and White Ball in 1966, a masquerade held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The lavish fête was ostensibly to honor Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham, but it was just as much an occasion for Capote to rub elbows with his so-called "swans" (some of the era's best known socialites, including Babe Paley and Gloria Guinness) as well as such esteemed partygoers as Frank Sinatra, Andy Warhol, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Brooke Astor .
