Chet Lo Fall 2024 Ready-to-Wear: Fashioning a Terracotta Army

Chet Lo looked to China’s Terracotta Army as a source of inspiration to build on the idea of protection – and his signature spiky knits serve a similar purpose.

“Growing up as a queer Asian boy in America, I was bullied a lot for both my race and my identity. I always looked at the Terracotta Army as a sense of strength. For the fall 2024 collection, I wanted to emulate that strength and reawaken the army and myself,” Lo explained.

On the runway, he offered two looks in a red print that resembled the surface of the 2,000-year-old statues, as well as a shoulder protector, a tank top, and a body-hugging gown adorned with silver sequins that brought to mind dragon scales. Also in abundant supply was a range of dresses, hoodies, and trousers with spiky details.

In true east-meet-west spirit, the color palette of the collection was based on German artist Gerhard Ritcher’s 1989 painting “Uran.” The squarish color blocks in the artwork, according to Lo, resembled the decaying lamellar armor covering the soldiers’ chests.

The show’s handbags and footwear came from Lo’s recent capsule collection with Charles & Keith.
