In the weeks since his tragic death on July 20th, Chester Bennington’s widow has shared videos, photos, and touching stories about her late husband in order to not only keep his memory alive, but to speak up about the many misconceptions and myths behind mental illness. And now Talinda Bennington is sharing a video that serves as a reminder that someone can be hiding a lot of pain behind their smile.

Talinda recently shared a photo of the smiling Linkin Park singer days before his suicide, before she tweeted a heart-wrenching private family video of Chester just 36 hours before his death.

In the tweet, Talinda revealed she was posting the video to show that “depression doesn’t have a face or a mood.”

In the clip, Chester can be seen beaming and laughing (and utterly grossed out!) as he tried some jelly beans with his children.

The video serves as a crucial reminder that a person struggling with mental illness can be hiding so much behind their smile, and that you never truly know what a person is going through beneath the surface.

While we can’t even begin to imagine what Talinda and her family and friends are feeling after such an incredible loss, we are so proud to see her channeling her grief into helping people better understand mental illness.

By sharing photos and videos of Chester, Talinda’s words and her message are helping to chip away at the many stigmas behind mental illness, and as painful as it might be, we hope she continues to shed light on the wonderful person Chester was and the many ways those struggling with mental illness are not alone. We can’t help but think he’d be immensely proud if he knew.
