Cherry Valentine, 'RuPaul's Drag Race UK' Star, Dead at 28

The drag performer died at age 28 on Sept. 18, his family confirmed.

Drag performer Cherry Valentine—born George Ward—has sadly died, according to his family. He was 28 years old. 

Valentine was known for being a contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, and also worked as a mental health nurse. He died on Sunday, Sept. 18, though an official cause of death has not yet been revealed. 

According to Deadline, Ward's family confirmed the tragic news in a statement to the press, that read, "It is with the most heart-wrenching and deepest sadness to inform you that our George—Cherry Valentine—has tragically passed away." 

"This will come as a profound shock to most people and we understand there is no easy way for this to be announced," the statement continued. "As his family, we are still processing his death and our lives will never be the same." 

"We understand how much he is loved and how many lives he has inspired and touched," the family added. "All we ask is for your patience and your prayers in this time." 

The statement concluded with the message, "We love you Georgie 30 November 1993-18 September 2022."

The BBC—which airs the UK reality competition series—also issued a statement to send their condolences to Ward's family in the wake of the tragic news. 

"We are all shocked and heartbroken to hear the news of the passing of George, known to many as Cherry Valentine," the statement read, per People. "A fan favourite and an inspiration to so many, we were privileged to have worked with him at BBC Three. He will be hugely missed by his many fans and friends." 

"Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends at this difficult time," added the statement.
