  • Cher just opened up about aging on her 77th birthday.

  • “When will I feel old?” she asked on Twitter.

  • The artist certainly feels forever young, and she has a few tricks up her sleeve for maintaining that energy.

If there’s anyone who has proven age is just a number, it’s Cher, who continuously challenges age-normative barriers with her style, wit, and even her romantic relationships. (She recently reportedly split from 37-year-old music producer Alexander “A.E.” Edwards.) So, turning 77 on May 20 was just another day for the star—and she took the opportunity to make a joke about getting older. She seized the special day by sharing some candid thoughts on aging.

“Ok, Will Someone PLEASE Tell me…..When Will I Feel OLD,” the singer tweeted. “This is ridiculous. I keep hearing these numbers, but I Honestly can’t understand them.”

Fans and followers chimed in to wish her a happy birthday and celebrate her carefree attitude about getting older. “Queen. Age is a state of mind,” one person responded. “Age is a number. When you open your heart (like I know you do) we are ageless. The spirit hasn’t got an age,” another added. “You are timeless and eternal! We ❤️ you, beautiful @cher!!” someone else wrote.

To end her tweet, Cher signed off with: “Got to go work out.” And staying active, she has explained in the past, is one of the many ways she maintains her youthful essence. Last January, she tweeted details of her intense fitness routine, which includes abs, Zumba, yoga, wall sits, and step class. And around that same time, while stars close to her age like Andie MacDowell and Jane Fonda let their silver hair shine, she unabashedly came forward to state that she will never go gray, especially as someone who loves to constantly switch up her look. “[Going gray] is fine for other girls,” she told People. “I’m just not doing it!”

Aside from her physical appearance and ability, Cher’s spryness is, as her admirers pointed out, a dedicated state of mind. In fact, she doesn’t even think she’s old enough to be called an “icon,” despite getting the reference often. “In my mind, an icon has always got to be old to be iconic. I can’t think [I’m] old yet,” she told Allure in October of last year. “It’s fun, but I don’t take it seriously because… does it mean you’ve just lasted longer than everybody else?”

In her opinion, those who have earned icon status are legends Tina Turner and her now-late mother, actress Georgia Holt. “My mom gets up and she puts her lipstick on and does her hair… my mom is beautiful and even now, [she’s got] this amazing skin. She’s a pain in the ass—and the hair, you cannot believe her hair,” she explained. “So my mom’s an icon to me, and nobody else knows it, but I know it.”

It was likely Holt who instilled in Cher her love for dressing up and resisting conventions. After all: “You never stop being a girl,” she told People. “If you never stop being a girl, you’ll never get old.”
