Chemung County household hazardous waste collection event coming in May

CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — If you’re a Chemung County resident and have a stash of old or unused hazardous materials in your house, a Cornell Cooperative Extension collection event is coming.

According to a release by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chemung County, the hazardous waste disposal and collection event will be held on Saturday, May 18, for residents to dispose of various items.

Pre-registration for the event is required and upon registration, a time slot and the address to the event are given.

A list of some of the items that’ll be collected include:

  • Ammonia

  • antifreeze

  • Arts and craft supplies

  • Household batteries

  • Bleach

  • Brake fluid

  • Cesspool cleaners

  • Drain Cleaners

  • Driveway sealer

  • Dry cleaning fluids

  • Engine and radiator flushes and flood cleaners

  • Fluorescent lights

  • Gasoline

  • Herbicides

  • Insect Sprays

  • Mercury and items containing mercury

  • Metal polishes

  • Mothballs

  • Muriatic acid

  • Latex and oil-based paints

  • Chemistry set supplies

  • Oven cleaners

  • Paint thinners and pesticides

  • Photo chemicals

  • Pool chemicals

  • Radiator cleaners

  • Rodent killers

  • Rust preventatives

  • Sealants

  • Solvents

  • Transmission fluids

  • Wood preservatives

  • Wood strippers

Electronics will not be accepted.

The event is free and if you’d like to participate in the cleanup, call the Cornell Cooperative Extension at 607-734-4453 from May 10 to May 15, weekdays only from 9 a.m. to noon and then 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
