Chemung County Dept. of Aging to participate in Older Americans Month

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – May is Older Americans Month. The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care is participating in several events to recognize seniors.

“There’s so many contributions that older Americans give,” said Director of the Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care Beth Stranges.

This year’s older Americans month is centered around connections.

“What we’re doing is really making sure that people in our community learn about services, programs. How they can connect with each other. How they can get out and get social, be active and stay engaged and how we as organizations can find out what the needs are for our community members and get out there and make sure we are making connections as well,” said Stranges.

Staff from the department participated in a volunteer event with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier this morning. It will celebrate and recognize Older Americans Month on May 9.

“We’re gonna celebrate all of the contributions of older adults in our community. That’ll be held at New Beginnings United Methodist Church. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. There will be some tabling there that will begin at 12:30 p.m. Different members of our community, different organizations and at 1 p.m. the program will start,” said Stranges.

They also encourage seniors in the area to participate in more events, including the 33rd annual Chemung County Senior Games starting on May 21.

“We have three weeks worth of games. There’s different events. There’s a golf event. There’s pickleball. There’s bocce. There’s cornhole and on June 14, we wrap up our senior games by holding a really great field day and picnic event at Harris Hill Youth Camp and we have a huge basket raffle. We had a picnic lunch. We have games up there and it’s a really great opportunity for individuals in the community to connect and learn about resources that we have here in Chemung County,” said Stranges.
