Remember when flat screen TVs took the world by storm? Billed as the thinnest TVs money could buy, state-of-the-art features included things like 720p HD, the ability to wall mount your set, and the introduction of this wonderful thing called HDMI. Decades later, the above laurels seem rather primitive, but as TV companies continue to develop new and exciting displays, the world still wants its TVs to be as thin as possible.

Today's Top Deals

With the rise of OLED technology, the need for a backlighting panel has virtually disappeared, mostly due to the fact that OLED displays contain self-emissive pixels that require no additional lighting source. And with the self-emitting diodes built right inside of the display, TV manufacturers gain a lot more flexibility (literally, but we’ll get to that in a moment) with what they can achieve with a TV display.

So just how thin can a TV get? We’re beyond inches — the thinnest TVs can now be measured in millimeters. And this razor-thin display technology creates a plethora of interesting avenues for the future of this technology. For instance, Samsung is already producing thin TVs that can double as digital art frames or display panels that literally roll up and disappear when turned off.

Sci-fi movies like Back to the Future Part II painted a reality where window blinds were TVs. That idea seemed so far-fetched back then, but it’s not too far away at this point. Trade shows like CES (Consumer Electronics Show) have been showcases for these emerging display technologies.

That being said, there are only a handful of super-thin TVs available for consumers right now, and a few more on the way, but the future of thin TVs is looking pretty unreal at the moment.

What the Expert’s Say

When designing an ultra-thin TV, manufacturers have plenty to worry, especially when it comes to fitting all the core components (main board, power supply, speakers) into a space-starved chassis. But in the words of Lydia Cho, Head of TV Product Marketing for Samsung: “With less room for speakers, there’s more room for innovation.”

We had the opportunity to chat with Lydia about the current state of Samsung TVs; and more specifically, how a brand renowned for producing such phenomenally thin displays is able to achieve such impressive performance with less and less room to house internal peripherals.

“Premium TVs are available in a range of screen sizes, and the thinness of the TV does not correspond to less screen space. With that said, to keep TVs like the Samsung S95C so thin, Samsung leveraged new technology to miniaturize key components in the design. The result provides customers with an ultra-large, ultra-bright, ultra-thin TV that offers an unmatched viewing experience.”

As it stands, the Samsung S95C is the thinnest TV the company has ever made, and going into the second generation of the famous QD-OLED formula, there’s plenty to love about one of Samsung’s new, razor-thin flagship sets. “The new Samsung S95C OLED is 11mm… the company’s slimmest offering to date. [And] with the Samsung Infinity One Design with Slim One Connect, it has a beautifully sleek profile that shines in any room of your home – whether it’s your home theater or family room.”

TVs are just going to keep getting thinner and thinner, and thanks to the innovations of renowned brands like Samsung, we won’t have to worry about picture and sound quality being sacrificed as chassis-space continues to shrink.

Even though the LG WX 65-inch Wallpaper 4K Smart OLED TV is technically the thinnest TV you can buy (measuring only 0.15 inches thick), it’s not widely in stock anymore. That’s why the LG OLED Evo G2 Series is our top pick. It’s available in a wide variety of sizes, while still maintaining a relatively sleek profile of just 1 inch.

Unlike other TVs that tend to widen around the base area, the LG OLED Evo G2 Series manages to maintain its slim chassis all the way through. This helps to eliminate the gap you tend to see whenever TVs are wall-mounted. This happens because most flat-screens start off razor-thin at the top and proceed to thicken as you get to the base. With the LG OLED Evo Gallery Edition, you’ll be treated to a gorgeous display powered by a rich and vibrant OLED panel. When it comes to colors, this TV has incredible depth and range. Powered by the smart webOS interface, users also have access to all of their favorite streaming services.

Pros

  • Excellent colors and contrast

  • Perfect off-angle viewing

  • Evo panel delivers chart-topping brightness for an OLED

  • Optimized for next-gen gaming

Cons

  • Doesn’t come with a stand

  • Lacks HDR10+ support

Best For: Those looking for the brilliance and vibrant colors of a Samsung QLED, and who want to showcase some of the most visually stunning artwork the world has ever seen.
Why We Chose It: Samsung’s The Frame is a breathtaking QLED in the traditional sense, but what we really love is the fact that you can have the TV powered off and still display artwork.

Read More: 12 Best Samsung TVs of 2023

Key Specs:
– 1 inch thick (without stand), 10.3 inches thick (w/ stand)
– QLED technology
– 4K/120Hz with four HDMI 2.1 inputs
– Tizen OS user interface

The 2022 edition of The Frame from Samsung makes a major improvement over its 2020 predecessor in terms of thinness. Originally, The Frame measured in at 1.8-inches without its stand, which was on the thicker side compared to its competitors in this category. However, Samsung slimmed down The Frame, which is now just 1-inch thick. The newest models of The Frame also retain the unique art function that makes this such a unique product. Why just have a TV on your wall when it could double as a dynamic art frame?\

We can agree that TVs have a purpose when they’re on, but most of the time they’re just occupying space on a wall doing nothing when they’re off.  The Frame eliminates that problem by displaying your favorite artwork when the TV is off, essentially turning the display into a digital canvas worthy of making your art friends jealous. And thanks to the thin frame, it will look exactly like any other piece of artwork hanging in your home. The visual effect is stunning, and this is without a doubt one of the most beautiful televisions ever created. (We recently named this one of the best TVs of 2023.)

Customers need to purchase individual works of art to display, with more than 1,400 selections from museums around the world, as well as new artwork from contemporary artists. Alternatively, you can sign up for a subscription to the Samsung Art Store or display your own photos. There are also motion sensors built into The Frame, so when nobody is around, the display will turn completely off so it’s not wasting energy.

Pros

  • Powerful brightness

  • Great off-angle viewing

  • Mounts flush to the wall like a picture frame

  • Quantum HDR delivers better colors and contrast than regular HD

Cons

  • A little expensive

  • Not the best sound quality

Full Review: Hisense A6H

Key Specs:
– LED-LCD
– 4K/60Hz with three HDMI inputs
– Google TV interface

If you’re in the market for a thin TV that costs less than the rest, consider the Hisense 55-inch A6H. Sure, it’s not a flagship set by any means, especially when it comes to contrast (the A6H picture can look a bit washed out from time to time), but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be on your radar. You’re still getting up to 4K resolution, HDR support, and Hisense’s Game Mode Plus, which adjusts picture settings to bring out all the details for your next-gen games.

The A6H also runs on Google TV for all things user interface and smart TV, giving you access to a ton of movies, TV shows and other Google TV exclusives. Sometimes the grand champ doesn’t dunk and dribble the ball as cool as the rest (it’s the best sports analogy we could come up with), but when you need a thinner set (just about 3 inches from front to back, sans TV feet) that still rocks your living room, the 55-inch A6H is the one we’d choose.

Pros

  • Super-inexpensive

  • 4K resolution

  • Game Mode Plus and Sports Mode

  • Decent HDR support

Cons

  • Picture can look washed out at times

  • Not exactly a “razor thin” TV

  • Only 60Hz refresh rate

Key Specs:
– 2.7 inches thick (without stand)
– Mini-LED lighting
– Up to 4K/144Hz with four HDMI inputs
– Roku TV interface

TCL is renowned for its extensive lineup of budget-friendly TVs that pack a ton of excellent picture and smart features into sets that cost far less than the competition. Now at first, we weren’t sure we would be able to include a TCL set in this roundup; not because we don’t think they’re great, but we didn’t think the current lineup included anything that was thin enough. But upon closer inspection, we feel that the awesome 75-inch 6-Series Roku TV deserves a mention.

We’re very hesitant when recommending large screens with low refresh rates (especially if you plan on using the set for gaming), so the fact that this 6-Series set delivers up 4K at up to 144Hz for two HDMI inputs, and 4K/60Hz for the second pair, along with gaming must-haves like AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and VRR support, really put us at ease. And that’s on top of HDR support and Mini-LED lighting, making for a final picture that looks bright and colorful, on top of having excellent contrast.

In terms of overall profile, the 75-inch 6-Series features TCL’s super-cool FullView edge-to-edge display (the picture blends right into the perimeter trimming), and if you’re wall-mounting this bad boy, the TV only measures 2.7 inches from front to back. Using the included stand bumps this number up to 12.6 inches, but even with its pedestal, the 75-inch 6-Series still looks great on an entertainment center.

Pros

  • Up to 4K/144Hz (on two HDMI inputs)

  • Excellent price for the size

  • FullView display provides a seamless look

  • Powerful Mini-LED lighting

Cons

  • Not exactly a “razor-thin” TV

  • A little expensive

The X95K represents a few unique distinctions for Sony. For starters, it’s the company’s first full-on Mini LED sets, shrinking the size of traditional LEDs to deliver one of the brightest Bravia pictures we’ve ever seen. And when you factor in 4K upscaling and the incredible Google TV smart platform, the fact that the X95K also happens to be one of the thinnest TVs you can buy almost becomes a mere afterthought.

We also can’t forget to mention the Cognitive Processor XR tech, a frame-by-frame analyzer that Sony uses to automatically enhance colors and contrast based on what you’re watching, delivering a final picture that is way more vibrant and detailed than the competition.

Pros

  • Incredible brightness and accurate local dimming

  • XR Triluminos Pro delivers fantastic colors

The Sony A80K is one of our favorite LG OLED alternatives on the market. When it comes to 4K picture quality and overall color volume, nothing beats the processing power of a Triluminos display. Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR and XR OLED Contrast Pro both included in this set, and we’re big fans of what the picture tech does to our favorite movies and TV shows. The former acts as an automatic optimizer for whatever content you’re watching, giving you a final picture that’s much more vibrant and colorful, while the latter acts as a contrast-enhancer, giving the A80K the capability of delivering detailed imagery with both high and low levels of lighting.

Pros

  • Incredible OLED picture

Samsung’s amazing QN90B was our favorite QLED of 2022, but a new year means a whole new lineup of TVs. Introducing the Samsung QN90C, a stellar revamp of all the great things that worked with last year’s top-gun. For starters, Samsung returns to the fold with its almighty Quantum Matrix with Mini LED lighting, a grid of tiny diodes that illuminates the QN90C’s 30 million pixels, delivering brightness, rich colors, and well-balanced contrast in all new ways.

And when it comes to HDR, there’s a new kid in town! The QN90C is outfitted with Samsung’s Neural Quantum HDR+, a must-have for cinema enthusiasts. This processing tech ensures that when you fire up your favorite movie streams or 4K Blu-rays, you’re getting the exact picture the filmmakers intended for you to see. That’s on top of the triumphant return of Motion Xcelerator Turbo+, which keeps the TV’s 120Hz refresh rate looking as smooth as can be.

We’re also big fans of the NeoSlim architecture, which is to thank for the TV’s razor-thin silhouette and design. Not to mention the top-notch sound features you’ll be getting with this Samsung TV. In discussing a few features of the aforementioned Samsung S95C, Lydia Cho, Head of TV Product Marketing for Samsung called out some tech that’s included with the QN90C (and a few other Samsung models), too!

“The [QN90C] is outfitted with Dolby Atmos® that’s built directly into the TV, and Object Tracking Sound+ so you can enjoy cinema-mastered audio. You can pair the TV with a Samsung S800B Ultra-Slim soundbar or a Q900C soundbar, which utilize Q-symphony to seamlessly create an immersive soundscape. Whether it’s the world of Pandora or the arena feel of the NBA Playoffs, Samsung TVs and soundbars help bring these scenes to life right in your home.”

Pros

  • Chart-topping brightness

  • Arresting colors and contrast

  • Ultra-thin design

  • Samsung Gaming Hub

  • 4K/120Hz across four HDMI inputs

Cons

  • A bit expensive

  • Won’t get the same inky blacks as an OLED

The LG C2 was one of our favorite OLED TVs in 2022, but LG isn’t one to rest on its laurels. Now we have the amazing LG C3 joining the company’s lineup of fantastic OLED sets, and we couldn’t be happier. But what sets this model apart from last year’s? Well for one, we’re dealing with a completely revamped processor. The all-new a9 AI Processor Gen6 takes the C3 one step closer toward picture perfection by analyzing and optimizing every frame, ensuring you’re getting the best brightness, colors, and contrast for whatever you’re watching.

The C3 also rocks LG’s Ultra Slim Design, giving you an incredibly-thin bezel, along with the capability of displaying artwork and photos when you’re not actively watching TV. And did we mention the C3 is built for next-gen gaming, too? Thanks to NVIDIA G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium,VRR support, and a native 120Hz refresh rate, all of your Xbox Series X and PS5 titles will look and perform better than ever!

Pros

The LG C2 may be one of last year’s models, but don’t let that fool you: It was one of the best OLEDs we got to demo last year, and we highly recommend grabbing one while supplies last. But what makes the C2 lesser than the all-new C3. As far as it stands, it’s mostly a matter of processors. The C2 uses the a9 Gen 5 AI Processor while the C3 operates on the upgraded version of the same core chipset (the a9 Gen 6). But as far as picture features go, there’s plenty to dig about the C2’s performance.

Thanks to LG’s evo panel and onboard Brightness Booster, the C2 is still one of the brightest OLEDs on the market, and all the must-have gaming features built into the C3 are alive and well on the C2. We also appreciate the inclusion of Filmmaker Mode, which automatically calibrates picture quality settings and frame-rate to give you the final image that the creatives behind your favorite movies and shows want you to see.

When it’s an ultra-thin display and brilliant 8K upscaling you’re after, the Samsung QN900C is the QLED you’ll want. Where do we begin with this titan of a TV? Well, one thing that grabs our attention from the get-go is the QN900C’s Quantum Matrix Pro with Mini LED lighting. Sure, the 8K format isn’t readily available, but this Samsung TV is capable of breaking down and rebuilding whatever 4K source you’re feeding it, for an unmatched upscaling experience that is like no other. It may not be true 8K, but with the jaw-dropping imagery this bad boy can produce, we doubt you’ll be thinking about pixels.

The QN900C is also a juggernaut when it comes to gaming. Not only does the set feature Samsung’s built-in Game Hub, but thanks to the addition of Motion Xcelerator Turbo Pro, all of your next-gen games will be essentially robbed of any frame-stutter whatsoever. Oh, and let’s not forget to mention that if you plug in a gaming PC, you’ll be able to experience some content at up to 144Hz!

Pros

  • Next-level 8K upscaling

  • Infinity Screen with Slim One Connect

  • Powerful gaming performance

  • Dolby Atmos and Object Tracking Sound Pro

Cons

  • Very expensive

  • 8K is still a relatively new format

On the Horizon: Here Are Two of the Thinnest TVs Arriving in 2023

We all know that consumer tech never rests, and thin TVs are certainly no exception. Every year, TV titans like Samsung, LG and Sony can always be expected to drop somewhere between eight to often up to 20 different “new” models that push the boundaries of picture performance, web-connected capabilities, and yes, the overall thinness of the set. And as it stands, there are two upcoming TVs that we’d like to call attention to:

One of these sets is the all-new LG G3 Series. Powered by LG’s a9 Gen5 AI Processor, this 4K OLED is the company’s brightest self-emissive display to date, rivaling the kind of vibrancy you’d find on some of the best QLED screens. On top of HDMI 2.1 support across all four inputs, each connection is optimized to deliver the best picture and motion performance based on the component you’re plugging in, making the G3 an ideal TV for next-gen gamers.

Oh, and did we mention that the 65-inch model is only 1-inch thick? And that the 55-inch version is only 1.1 inches? The LG G3 is built to impress, and if you’re all about a razor-thin TV mounted to your wall, this 2023 OLED is one of the best ways to go.

Another model we’d like to draw attention to is the Samsung S95C OLED. Available in sizes as small as 55-inches and as large as 77-inches, the S95C is the second generation of Samsung’s amazing QD-OLED display: a screen that combines powerful quantum dots for heightened brightness and colors, and self-emissive pixels for doubling down on those inky black levels.

And as one of Samsung’s thinnest TVs to hit shelves in 2023, from front to back, all sizes of the S95C are only 0.4 inches thick!

Frequently Asked Questions About Thin TVs

Are the thinnest TVs the most expensive models, too?

Not always. The main reason you’ll see ultra-thin TVs paired with chart-topping prices has less to do with aesthetics and more to do with picture performance and features. Year to year, companies like Samsung, LG and Sony will design their flagship sets to look and feel next-level in every which way, from resolution and upscaling to colors, contrast, motion clarity, and smart add-ons. “Flagship” might also mean super-thin bezeling around the screen and a thin chassis.

The flagship rule isn’t ironclad though: There are plenty of mid-tier and even entry-level TVs with two-inch-or-less dimensions from front to back (we’ve called out a few in our roundup). So while the most expensive TVs on the market will inevitably be sleek and low-profile when compared to the rest, if thinness is important but your budget is limited, you’ll still be able to find models that check all the boxes.

Can the thinnest TVs be wall-mounted?

You bet they can! In fact, that’s one of the most exciting parts of having a thin TV: having it sit flush against the living room wall like a painting or portrait. Most of the time, you’ll be able to use whatever regular mounting hardware you can find anywhere to get the job done, but there are a small number of ultra-thin sets that may require you to use the hardware that comes with that TV (or purchase it separately) if you want zero gap between the wall and your TV.

Who makes the best thinnest TVs?

That depends on what you’re looking for in a TV. Are you all about eye-popping colors and ultra-bright backlighting? Then it sounds like a Samsung or Sony QLED is the kind of set you should have your sights on; and fortunately, both companies produce some truly excellent ultra-thin TVs. Are inky black levels more your thing? Then you should take a look at LG’s amazing lineup of OLED TVs, many of which are on the thin side to begin with because OLEDs don’t require the inclusion of a backlighting system.

And if pricing is more important than anything, brands like TCL and Hisense produce some pretty sleek sets that won’t break the bank. As stated in the first FAQ answer, thin TVs aren’t always tied to flagship pricing, so when it comes time to buy, ask yourself what kind of picture features and other considerations are most important to you and worry about thinness later.
