What is ChatGPT?
Everyone’s new best friend is ChatGPT — an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot with human-like communication skills.
People on social media are touting how helpful the allegedly knowledgeable tool is, while others are less impressed. ChatGPT launched in November and has since received 1 million users. Here’s why people are buzzing about the new technology.
What is ChatGPT?
Created by the Elon Musk-funded research lab, OpenAI, ChatGPT answers questions input by human users. It’s more conversational than a search engine because it can learn how to respond based on previous details from the conversation.
Can you trust ChatGPT? Is ChatGPT accurate?
The AI tool is fairly wise but somewhat imperfect. It can sound authoritative about incorrect or misleading information, but it’s not an actual encyclopedia. It’s AI trained to synthesize patterns in texts analyzed from the internet.
The software developer site StackOverflow banned posting answers from ChatGPT.
“The average rate of getting correct answers from ChatGPT is too low,” the company stated. Therefore, “the posting of answers created by ChatGPT is substantially harmful to the site and to users who are asking or looking for correct answers.”
Can ChatGPT write an essay?
While some academics lament that ChatGPT and other AI software could generate college-level essays, others are skeptical.
The Atlantic called ChatGPT’s writing “formulaic in structure, style, and content” and generally lacking in quality.
Why do people like ChatGPT?
Although skeptical, some TikTok users have been impressed with the quality of ChatGPT’s responses.
The user Charlie Amáyá Scott felt that its definition of “decolonization” was sufficient. But when they asked ChatGPT how AI could support the goals and demands of decolonization, it gave an answer Scott didn’t support.
“AI can also be used to monitor and protect Indigenous lands and resources,” Scott read. “For example, AI algorithms can be used to analyze satellite imagery and other data sources to identify and monitor illegal activities such as logging or mining on Indigenous lands.”
