This Charming Island in Newport, Rhode Island, Has a Luxury Resort Reopening With Stunning Water Views, a Spa, and a 22-slip Marina

The historic Newport Harbor Island Resort will reopen after a $50-million renovation this spring.

With its sprawling historic mansions, top-notch sailing, and beautiful beaches, Newport, Rhode Island, is the quintessential summer destination that draws millions of visitors and second-home owners.

However, if you prefer to explore the New England enclave from a more serene setting this year, consider staying at the newly reimagined Newport Harbor Island Resort, which sits on the shores of idyllic Goat Island, a quick drive away from downtown Newport.

Housed in a former torpedo factory, the property will reopen on April 15, 2024, after a $50-million renovation under the management of Davidson Resorts.

“At the new Newport Harbor Island Resort, we hope to attract guests and locals who are in search of refined simplicity — an escape from the bustle of the everyday, where they can retreat to nature while still maintaining an appreciation for life's little luxuries like plush linens, hand-crafted art, and gastronomic experiences,” David Smiley, the property’s general manager, told Travel + Leisure.

Under the creative direction of Dawson Design Associates, behind hotel projects including Rosewood Bermuda, Newport Harbor Island Resort was redesigned as the ultimate New England retreat. Most of the 257 guest rooms and 18 suites feature panoramic water views, custom art, and a neutral color palette punctuated by tasteful pops of blue and green inspired by the resort's coastal location.

“The main theme that we wanted to capture in the renovation — which we feel the DDA team did an incredible job with — was really to create a sense of cohesion between the different spaces, all evocative of coastal New England simplicity and charm in their own unique ways,” Smiley explained.

Travelers will find many local and regional references in the reimagined dining venues. The property's signature restaurant, 1639, boasts two outdoor decks with views of Narragansett Bay, and a menu that spotlights local classics. And the Pineapple Club, the resort's poolside eatery, will relaunch with a brand-new menu and additional cabana seating with an adults-only section and extended service to the marina deck. And, of course, those arriving by sailboat can take advantage of the property's 22-slip marina, which can accommodate vessels up to 240 feet long (rates start from $3 per foot).

Other notable highlights of the renovated property include a new spa, and a lively calendar of pop-up experiences and on-site events.
