Charlottesville, VA Mountain Bikers Petitioning For Trail Access On 'Ragged Mountain'

Mountain bikers in many locations are very sensitive to the prospect of losing trail access. As a sport, we are often at the mercy of landowners.

In Charlottesville, Virginia, a land dispute caused riders to lose access to a local reservoir. A petition has been drafted to bring back access to the reservoir.

Ragged Mountain is a popular recreation area for many different user groups. Unfortunately, biking was outlawed there. A petition was circulated to bring back biking there.

According to the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club, the concerns have been heard, and the CAMBC will attend board meetings to try and get access back.

According to the local outlet 29news, the issue of bike access was jurisdictional. The city allowed riding but that contradicted county rules. This will hopefully be cleared up at a board meeting in April.

The benefits of retaining bike access are clear. Having recreation a riding distance from town is a boon to the region both for health and environmental reasons.

Charlottesville is a college town in central Virginia with a vibrant riding scene. Hopefully, they can come together and convince the county to open the area up for recreation.
