How Charlize Theron Found Her Stunning Oscar Night Jewels
How does Hollywood royalty get ready for the Oscars? All it takes is a little preparation and a lot of jewelry. Academy Award winner Charlize Theron has been attending cinema’s biggest night since the mid-’90s, but she still manages to make each appearance feel new. At last night’s ceremony, Theron debuted a brunette bob and a sleek periwinkle gown from Dior that landed her on every best dressed list. However, the standout element of her ensemble was undoubtedly a white-gold double-wrap necklace from Bulgari featuring the iconic Serpenti design.
With over 75 carats and a playful snake motif, the piece stood out in a sea of conventional precious stones. Theron’s stylist Leslie Fremar had spent the past month searching for the perfect gems. “At first we had other ideas, but this came to life the moment we tried it on. It just worked—you have to trust your instinct,” shared Fremar after the ceremony. “With jewelry, it’s really trial and error. You have to see what works with the dress. Something can be beautiful but not work; sometimes it’s the wrong color metal or stone. I like to have my favorite pieces at the fitting so we can try them with the dress to make the final decision.”
With Bulgari creative director Lucia Silvestri, Fremar narrowed her choices down from a range of necklaces and bracelets until she found an ideal set. Though she started her search early, nothing could be finalized without the backless Maria Grazia-Chiuiri look which landed in Los Angeles on Monday. “Until the dress arrives, no decisions can be made,” said Fremar, who brought a selection of Bulgari pieces with her to the final fitting that afternoon. “The fact that the dress was completely covered and the Serpenti pieces were layered over the dress and not just on skin, made it feel fresh and modern.”
