Charli XCX and Troye Sivan Almost Drown in Nostalgia in the "1999" Music Video

It's impressive work for a duo that was born in the '90s.

There are pop references galore in the lyrics to Charli XCX and Troye Sivan's single, "1999." It's awash with Britney Spears nods in the chorus, a Jonathan Taylor Thomas name check, and more nuggets that will probably pop up on future listens. But the real treasure trove is in the newly released music video for the song, that's bursting late '90s nostalgia, if that's what you can call the feeling that Charlie and Sivan can have for an era when they were in elementary school. (Or, in 23-year-old Sivan's case, preschool.)

It's heavy on music video iconography, with nods to TLC and Eminem and Charli XCX as all of the Spice Girls in "Say You'll Be There" and Sivan as all of the Backstreet Boys. There's also flashes of The Matrix and American Beauty, The Sims and Nokia phones, and an iconic wig from Justin Timberlake's tight and curly days. Sadly, there's no sign of pogs anywhere in the video, but that may be too much of a deep cut.
