How Charli & Dixie D’Amelio Worked Together to Create Their First Makeup Line

Here's the lowdown on how to subscribe to Allure's print edition for more beauty routines, recommendations, and features.

Chances are you've already seen the D'Amelio sisters on TikTok. Well known for their mastery of viral dances, long lashes, and enthusiasm for content creation, 16-year-old Charli D'Amelio and 18-year-old Dixie D'Amelio have quickly become inseparable from the zeitgeist. Now, the sisters are announcing their latest venture: teaming up with Morphe to launch a new sub-brand called Morphe 2.

Morphe 2 aims to redefine the way makeup is marketed to young people. The collection invites everyone to celebrate their varying relationships with skin care, makeup, and beauty. Charli tells Allure, "With Morphe, we’re working together to show that you are beautiful, with or without makeup."

The brand promises that everything in the line is easy to apply: "Simple yet stunning" is a tagline for Morphe 2. The sub-brand includes six main types of products: a natural foundation tint that comes in 20 shades, jelly eye shimmers you can apply with your fingers, glossy lip oils, and more. Whether you’re looking to create a bold blue eye or just add a light wash of color to your lips, self-acceptance and embracing your personal relationship with makeup is at the core of Morphe 2’s mission.

"I want people to wear as little or as much as they want and feel confident," says Charli.

Dixie similarly says that she hopes Morphe 2 empowers and unites young people and ignites self-acceptance. "I’m the most confident when I'm around people who support me and this line is about bringing people together and doing exactly that," she says.

To celebrate the launch of Morphe 2, Allure spoke with the sisters about beauty, entrepreneurship, and how their relationship with makeup has changed during the pandemic.

ALLURE: How has staying at home influenced your beauty routine?

CHARLI D'AMELIO: I've had more time to learn. I’ve been asking [other TikTok creators] about beauty and I’ve enjoyed having more time to experiment with new types of makeup. I've also been working on doing eyeliner.

DIXIE D'AMELIO: I’ve been working on eyeliner too and I've been taking really good care of my skin.

When did your relationship with beauty begin?

D.D.: Through my mom, actually.

C.D.: I'd say my mom too. She’s always been really helpful in teaching us everything we need to know about how to take care of ourselves. Growing up as a competitive dancer, I always had to compete with a full face of makeup. Competitive dance taught me at an early age how creativity and makeup inform each other.

Is there any part of your beauty routine that you don’t post about on TikTok?

C.D.: I post pretty much everything on my TikTok. Sometimes I hold back from posting something because I know James [Charles] is going to say, "Why did you do that?" Joking, of course. I know that there's not one way to do makeup, but I still have a lot to learn. And I love that TikTok is filled with so many amazing, inspiring creators.

D.D.: I definitely do [my makeup] "wrong" all the time, but there’s no one way to do makeup.

How do you think makeup has influenced your relationship with yourself?

C.D.: I wear makeup for myself. I noticed during quarantine that I was doing my makeup even when I wasn't going out. I also love that makeup is so full of creativity.

D.D.: When I wear makeup, I feel like I'm actually getting ready for the day. It’s a form of self-care and makes me feel like I'm doing something positive for myself.

Why is it important for you both to launch this sub-brand with Morphe?

D.D.: We don’t hide anything on TikTok and this line feels very aligned with what we stand for. We want to show that blemishes and acne are okay. I love how natural, fun, glowy, and fresh Morphe 2 is.

C.D.: It's so important, especially for teen girls, to have access to a brand like this. I love that Morphe 2 can be both colorful and fun, but also natural and affordable.

How did you two collaborate creatively?

C.D.: We already do almost everything together. We had a lot of fun collaborating on this exciting project and we’re so excited to share it with the world. It, of course, came with compromise too.

D.D.: We are really strong collaborators. Our relationship is always getting stronger. We become closer every day.

How do you want people to feel when they wear Morphe 2?

C.D.: There's a lot about the line that I’m super in love with. I love the jelly eye shimmer so much. I want people to wear as little or as much as they want and feel confident. With Morphe, we’re working together to show that you are beautiful with or without makeup.

D.D.: We also want to continue to spread positivity and happiness. I’m the most confident when I'm around people who support me and this line is about bringing people together and doing exactly that.
