Charli D'Amelio Opens Up About What It Really Feels Like to Get Hate Online
Charli D'Amelio has been very outspoken when it comes to fighting back against online bullying.
In her most recent interview, she opened up about what it's really like to get hateful comments online.
Charli D'Amelio may have the most followers on TikTok, but she'll be the first to admit that having 82.5 million watching your every (dance) move isn't always easy. In a candid new interview, the 16-year-old opened up about what it's really like to face mean comments online.
"Yeah, people are saying positive things and people are hyping you up, people are complimenting you, but that's not what your eye goes to," Charli said in an interview on her family's new YouTube page. "It goes to when people say what's wrong about you. Sometimes it's things you can't fix and things you can't control. It hurts worse. You can get a million positive comments but those five negative ones, they hurt."
And when she does see those comments, Charli admitted that it's hard to ignore them. "How do you not defend yourself when people are trying to bring you down?" she said.
Because of her history in dance, it's the comments about her body that hit her the most. She revealed that she was once told a while back that she couldn't be a ballerina because she's too muscular. "I believed it so hearing that from hundreds of people online. It hurts."
Charli thinks that people have no problem writing mean things to people with a lot of followers because the trolls never think the comments will be seen. "They don't expect it to hurt us," she said. "If you have followers, you're not considered a person. You're just a thing that people get to judge and objectify and call names and bully."
Or, they can take things out of your past and resurface them, which is something Charli admitted to worrying about. "Something from when you were ten is going to get taken out of context," she said. "Or something you might regret every single day of your life is put on the Internet, and you have to relive it. Even when you try to apologize for it, they don't really care what you have to say. They don't care if you apologize, they don't care if you're truly sorry. They just want to make you feel bad."
This is far from the first time Charli has spoken out about the hateful comments she receives on the Internet. Earlier this month, the TikTok star stood up for her friend Kouvr Annon when trolls started commenting on her body.
"I can’t understand why some people think it’s okay to talk about someone’s looks, weight, sexual identity, etc in a negative way," Charli tweeted. "This can be hurtful to not only the person you are making fun of but also the people that look like or identify with what you are saying is a 'problem.'"

In fact, you can head to Charli's Twitter pretty much any day of the week and you will see her preaching kindness. At just 16, she clearly knows more about respect than many people on the Internet.
