Many would argue whether or not style is hereditary. But designer Charles Harbison is clear about where his love for clothes originates. Citing the matriarchs in his family as the spark that ignited an inevitable flame for fashion, the North Carolina native creates elevated essentials that are meant to stand out. Now, one four-year hiatus and a comeback collection later, he’s teamed up with Banana Republic to create a line of everyday pieces as an homage to those who influenced him most.

A love letter to his mom, grandmother, aunts and cousins, Harbison Studio’s Banana Republic partnership includes an 18-item offering of easy-to-wear designs infused with a subtle sense of hometown nostalgia. The collection, titled "Legacy of Joy," draws inspiration from the duality of the women in his life, who worked factory jobs by day before changing out of their uniforms into something more bold and expressive for a night out.

As for the clothes themselves, there’s plenty to choose from. On offer are an assortment of puff-sleeve blouses and dresses, as well as a handful of knits. The lineup also includes a selection of well-tailored separates that have the power to be dressed up or down with ease, depending on the occasion.

The designer made his official return to the industry at the Harlem's Fashion Row show during New York Fashion Week in September, alongside fellow Black-owned brands Tier NYC and Jonathan Hayden. "Coming back into the fashion conversation, it's exciting because I feel like we're primed now to have discussions in a more open way through product," he explained in an interview with Refinery29. "It's really an exciting time to be back."
