Your Character Matters: An eighth grader with a bright future

TULARE, Calif. (KSEE) – An eighth grader from Tulare has a very bright future ahead of her.

A pep rally at Oak Valley Elementary in Tulare. The student body is excited about an upcoming basketball tournament.

And front and center, cheering on the team and school is eighth grader Fernanda Chavez.

“I’ve always loved school. I like participating a lot,” she said.

This is Fernanda’s last year at Oak Valley, but she has made the most of her time there and made a very good impression.

“She always puts her best foot forward in everything that she does. You don’t ever have to prompt her to be on task or to get her work done. She does just naturally does it,” said seventh and eighth-grade English teacher Margaret Docanto.

Teacher Margaret Docanto has had Fernanda as a student for three years. She says she’s a natural leader.

“She is just a great student and just a shining light among everything in life that might not shine. She is just that student that stands out.”

Fernanda is on the dance team and is in leadership and yearbook. She says her drive comes from her mother.

“She uses this quote a lot ‘If you think you can do it you’ll be able to, but if you say that you can’t then you won’t be able to,’ so my mindset is yes I can and I always think of being able to do it,” she said.

Fernanda plans to take her positive attitude with her to high school next year, so she can accomplish her dreams.

And those who know her are confident she will succeed.
