"It: Chapter 2" Will Include This Horrifying Moment From the Book
Though the film is titled with one vague word, just the mention of It has the power to send chills down our spines and remind us of last year's clown-riddled horrors. As if it weren't bad enough the first time around, It: Chapter 2 looms ahead of us, and we're learning some of the scares that await in the sequel. Suffice it to say, they sound terrifying.
During an interview, Gary Dauberman, who wrote the film's script, told CinemaBlend that It: Chapter 2 will feature a reenactment of the Ritual of Chüd, one of the most disturbing scenes from Stephen King's original 1986 novel. If you haven't read the book, the scene is a kind of mystical war between Pennywise and the Losers Club that involves the characters biting one another's tongues and telling jokes until one breaks. And, yup, the creators know that kind of thing is hard to pull off on a movie screen.
"The Ritual of Chüd is challenging, but it's such an important component to the book that we had to address it," Dauberman explained. "That stuff is difficult to balance, but because [director Andy Muschietti, producer Barbara Muschietti and I] worked with each other before, when I'm writing pages and all that stuff, it becomes more of a conversation and less like, 'Hey, here's what I did.' It's sort of organic; it's really kind of just chipping away at the stone and trying to find the most focused, accessible way into some of the more metaphysical aspects of that book."
Dauberman also addressed another scary plotline: the book's scenes about Adrian Mellon, a gay man who is the victim of a hate crime before running into Pennywise. “I was kind of chugging along through the Adrian Mellon stuff, and sort of more the stuff that’s in the book that you kind of just want to see onscreen. I’m writing that stuff, and Andy would kind of go off and think about Chüd and how he wants to visually represent all that stuff. He just came up with some brilliant, brilliant stuff…It really is going to be amazing.”
Now that you know some of what's coming when It: Chapter 2 premieres in September 2019, you have plenty of time to prepare yourself emotionally for the horrors of Pennywise. Shiver.
