It’s the best barrier balm I’ve tried.

Ugh, winter skin am I right?? But seriously the dry cold weather is wreaking its usual havoc on my epidermis. The skin on my ankles is so cracked and scaly that it hurts when it makes contact with my duvet, my elbows and knees resemble bark, my hands feel like leather, and my chest and legs are overrun with dry spots. My skin and body care regimens are not cutting it. I was going to throw it all out and start anew when I discovered a much easier and financially friendlier solution — The Outset’s new Botanical Barrier Rescue Balm.

As of late, barrier balms have become a dime a dozen. They vary in use and benefits but generally speaking, this is a thick, emollient, soothing, moisturizing, and protective product. The Outset’s Botanical Barrier Rescue Balm has those properties but simply does it better than the rest.

The Outset

The first ingredient of note is The Outset’s proprietary Hyaluroset complex, a botanically derived hyaluronic acid alternative with similar benefits. It hydrates and plumps skin, helps your skin better retain that hydration and seals all that moisture in. There is also antioxidant-rich marula oil which soothes, softens, and repairs damaged skin. Lastly, I’d like to highlight rosehip oil which is another antioxidant-rich ingredient that increases cell turnover, strengthens your skin barrier, and improves collagen production.

Part of the reason that I like The Outset’s Barrier Balm more than others is that it travels well. The small tin and wax-like formula make this super easy to throw into a purse, a jacket pocket, or a work tote. It won’t spill or leak and it’s small and compact.

At first, it’s an almost solid, shea butter-like consistency. When you use it for the first time, you have to apply pressure and break through the superficial top seal. Underneath you’ll find that the formula is thick, buttery, and spreads nicely. I apply it as a remedy for every single one of the aforementioned ailments — I use it on my lips, hands, ankles, chest, elbows, knees, etc. It softens, soothes, reduces redness, and is one of the main reasons my skin has dried, tightened, cracked and fallen off like an eggshell.
