*Major spoilers for season 1 episode 8 of WandaVision below!*

We certainly took a trip down memory lane during episode 8 of WandaVision. After discovering that Agnes is also a witch who has been manipulating things over in Westview, Wanda was forced to take a trip down memory lane as Agnes made her relive moments of her life to figure out how she got all her power.

In the end, Agnes explained that the power that Wanda holds is called Chaos Magic.

"You have no idea how dangerous you are. You're supposed to be a myth. A being capable of spontaneous creation, and here you are, using it to make breakfast for dinner," Agnes said in the episode. "Your children and Vision, and this whole little life you've made, this is Chaos Magic, Wanda. And that makes you the Scarlet Witch."

For fans of the MCU, not only is this the first time that Wanda is officially called the Scarlet Witch in any of the series or TV shows, it's also gives us an explanation for Wanda's powers.

What exactly is Chaos Magic?

In the Marvel comics, Chaos Magic is considered the most powerful type of magic and almost believed to be non-existent. Chaos allows the user to not only warp someone's reality or just reality itself, it can also completely change it.

In the Avengers comics (issues 185-187) it was revealed that Wanda got her chaos magic from Chthon, one of the Elder Gods of Earth. Wanda, who was born on Wundagore Mountain where Chthon's spirit was bound by Morgan Le Fay, was inflicted with Chthon's energy when he sensed that she had magical abilities. This increased her magic even more, which otherwise would have been weak.

Later on, when Wanda arrives again to Wundagore after Chthon encourages her to in a dream, he uses her body as a vessel through the magic he gave her originally. The Avengers are able to return her spirit back to her body and transfer Chthon's to a marionette, which they later bury under an avalanche to keep him from coming back ever again.

How did Wanda get Chaos Magic in the MCU?

It seems like Wanda was affected by the mind stone that was within Loki's scepter that HYDRA had. After interacting with it, Wanda's powers increased and she was able to use even greater magic, including Chaos Magic. At the end, her powers combined with her grief allowed her to create a new reality within the hex that we know as Westview, which also helped her bring "back" Vision and create her sons, Billy and Tommy.
