Channing Tatum legendarily met and fell in love with his now-wife Jenna Dewan Tatum on the set of their hit 2006 film, Step Up, and started dating pretty much immediately. (He was naked when he asked her out; it was a whole thing.) But when it came time to propose, Channing was just too good of an actor, and his creative way of keeping the proposal a secret totally backfired.

Apparently, Channing kept his intentions to pop the question so under wraps that it drove Jenna to literal tears. “When I proposed to my wife I did something pretty cruel because I thought she was on to me. I basically told her I never wanted to get married to try to throw her off,” he revealed in an interview with BBC Radio 1. “I told her, 'I don’t believe in the institution of marriage and I don’t think I ever want to get married.' She basically broke down crying.”

Poor Jenna! Her tears may have helped speed things along though. “I was like, 'Oh man, she’s crying, this is not going well at all' so I had to propose to her sooner rather than later,“ the actor said.

By the way, if the story of a man who convinces his girlfriend he never wants to get married so she'll be thrown off the scent of his plans to propose sounds a little familiar, it's because it's also the plot of the season six Friends finale, wherein Chandler tells Monica he doesn't ever want to get married, even though he's actually been ring shopping with Phoebe. Classic Chandler/Channing.

In real life, Channing did propose in 2008 in Maui, Hawaii. He and Jenna have been together for 12 years and married for eight, and they are now parents of an adorable four-year-old daughter, Everly. All's well that ends well.
