Chanel Created a Fake Beach for Their Spring 2019 Show in Paris

At Tuesday morning’s Spring 2019 Chanel show during Paris Fashion Week, Karl Lagerfeld built an actual beach within the walls of the city’s Grand Palais. Karl is known for his elaborate set designs from season to season, in the past, he has transformed the historical palace in the heart of the city into everything from a massive grocery store to an airport; he's built a waterfall and even a spaceship. This season, though, he extended summer a little longer by creating a set made of sand, sun, and even a moving tide-line.

The result was so on point that if you look quickly, it looks an actual beach. So, it simply wouldn’t have made sense to create a runway of sand and expect all the models to teeter down the catwalk in sky-high heels, right? As such, the designer chose to send every single girl down the runway barefoot—with a pair of brand new shoes in hand.

Every season, Chanel creates one style shoe which all the models wear on the runway regardless of the ready-to-wear look they’ve been styled in. This season, it was a short block heel sandal—made of Lucite in continuation of the trend that has been all over the fall runways for this current shopping season. As for the apparel, the collection was rife with both light pastels and deep black tones alike, filled with flowing midi dresses trimmed in lace as well as more sporty capri-length bodysuits made of spandex.

Though not the official closing of Fashion Month, we’re certainly getting close. And we couldn’t imagine a better way to bid adieu to the current summer season than with an indoor beach, created by none other than Chanel.
