Champaign Public Library celebrates summer reading with launch event

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Sunday was a big day for bookworms of all ages. Kids spent the afternoon celebrating the start of Champaign Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The whole theme is centered around “Reading for the Stars.” Organizers said offering prizes and incentives like this encourages students to continue reading throughout the summer. They added that adults can also hit the books to enter for a chance to win a gift basket.

The party had live music, giant games and robot demonstrations.

“I think Summer Reading Kick-Off at the Champaign Public Library has become, for us, just the mark of the start of summer. Like, we’re almost there,” said Program and Events Librarian Maura Stutzman. “It’s definitely the temperature today for summer, so we’re definitely there in that sense. And it’s just a time for everyone to come out and start to celebrate summer beginning.”

This year’s summer reading program goes until August 15th. To sign up, head over to the library in-person on West Green Street or visit their website.
