Champaign Park District hosts Touch a Truck

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Hundreds of families went to Champaign Centennial Park on Wednesday for the Champaign Park District’s Touch a Truck event.

The park district hosts the event every year. This year’s event featured fire trucks, police cars and military vehicles, along with balloon makers, snow cones and more on the side.

Robert White, the park district’s Special Events Manager, said Touch a Truck is the district’s way of giving back to the community.

“It’s an opportunity for the younger kids to come in and play, touch and use,” White said. “You hear all the sirens and the horn honking on some pretty large and unique vehicles that they would normally see. Driving by them, they can see them up close.”

Joe Lamberson, the Champaign Police Department’s public information officer, said Touch a Truck is a great way for kids to learn about how first responders serve the community.

“It just gives kids the opportunity to see police in a non-law enforcement setting to climb around and ask questions and really to just have some fun with us,” Lamberson said.

The Champaign Park District plans to host several other family friendly events throughout the year. For the full list of events click here.
