Champaign County Forest Preserve to improve accessibility with new projects

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign County Forest Preserve has some new projects that’ll make enjoying nature more accessible.

They’re installing a new accessible kayak launch at the Homer Lake Forest Preserve. This will make it easier for people with mobility issues or others to keep their kayaks steady.

They’re also focusing on expanding park grounds at Middle Fork Forest Preserve for more accessible fishing and stargazing.

“What people want most are natural areas and ways to get out and have some ways to interact with nature, whether that’s through programs, through interpretation, but also just through outdoor recreation,” said Bridgette Moen, Champaign County Forest Preserve Planning Director. “And we want to make sure that’s safe and accessible for everybody.”

The Middle Fork Dark Sky project will cost more than $500,000 and the fishing trail was roughly $15,000. The Homer Lake project will be more than $100,000.
