Chambersburg brings back grazing goats

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – For the second year in a row, expect to see grazing goats managing overgrown trails in Chambersburg.

The borough says they’ve authorized FlockWorks to provide guided goat grazing to clear overgrown land along the banks of the Conocochegue Creek adjacent to the Rail Trail between West King and Commerce Streets.

Starting this month, FlockWorks will set up electric fencing and signs in the area where the goats will graze, starting south of Commerce Street and then moving toward West King Street.

The borough says hiring the grazing goats last year “proved to be a cost-effective way to remove overgrown and invasive vegetation from the banks of the creek adjacent to the Rail Trail.”

Last year the cost to hire the goats was approved to cost no more than $5,651.58, according to the borough.

Those in the area are asked to stay away from the electric fence, keep dogs away from the area, not feed the goats, not add anything to the grazing area, and know there are cameras in the area.

Residents are still encouraged to visit the rail trail.
