It's the Met Gala 2023! This year's theme was "In honor of Karl," and people...surprisingly delivered!

Because Lagerfeld's work is so expansive, showing up at least vaguely on theme proved to be possible for many guests!

So, here are some looks that stood out as being especially on-theme:

1.Dua Lipa's gown is an homage to the final gown worn by Claudia Schiffer in the 1992 Chanel Haute Couture fall/winter collection.

2.Nicole Kidman rewore the dress from her 2004 Chanel No. 5 commercial — or, should I say, "Le Film" — which was directed by Baz Luhrmann. They even had a Met Gala red carpet reunion.

3.Olivia Wilde's dress is a reference to the 1983 Chloé "violin dress" designed by Lagerfeld himself. In fact, Vogue China's Margaret Zhang wore pretty much the same thing.

4.Gisele Bündchen wore a Chanel Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2007 that she'd previously worn in a Harper's Bazaar feature photographed by Karl.

5.Naomi Campbell also went for vintage Chanel couture — hers is from Karl's 2010 collection.

6.Margot Robbie wore a remake of a Chanel dress modeled by Cindy Crawford in 1993. She said of it, "I feel really great in it, actually."

7.BLACKPINK's Jennie also paid homage to a vintage Chanel dress, in this case from Karl's fall 1990 ready-to-wear collection.

8.Let's take a moment to appreciate the people who dressed as Karl himself. First we have Cara Delevingne, one of Karl's noted collaborators. The gloves are a nice touch.

9.It's one of the subtler looks of the night, but Ke Huy Quan's Dior outfit is undoubtedly pure Karl.

10.Cardi B is Karl up top, a Chanel bag down below. That's not me projecting — she told Vogue the Chen Peng Studio dress was inspired by a bag.

11.Now we have the portion of the post where we must discuss the people who attended as Karl's beloved cat, Choupette. First, we have Doja Cat in Oscar de la Renta.

12.Next, we have Lil Nas X. His makeup was done by Pat McGrath. Wowza.

I will not be acknowledging J*red Leto.

13.In my humble opinion, Anne Hathaway's look is a good example of how Versace married its imagery with Karl. The camellia flower pin in her hair is vintage from the '90s. The Bulgari coin necklace references popular Chanel coin accessories in the '80s. The overall effect is an ode to '90s supermodels.

14.Janelle Monáe's oversized black and white Thom Browne jacket is an obvious nod to Lagerfeld's black and white Chanel aesthetic, but extra points go for the sequined swimwear — given how much Karl is associated with the Chanel bikini. Also, shoutout to the Choupette bag.

15.Finally, is it subtle? No! But you can't deny that Jeremy Pope's giant Karl train is on theme.

Not that anyone asked, but if I attended, I would wear an outfit that said, "Ugly nasty person." Goodnight!
