The Celebrity Engagements of 2019: A Definitive Guide

What a year to fall in love. We’ve witnessed plenty of celebrity engagements in 2019, with celebrities like Emma Stone, Katy Perry, Hilary Duff and Jennifer Lawrence all saying “I do.”

Some couples, like Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger, surprised fans with their whirlwind romance, while others, like Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, led to huge echoes of relief from excited fans. Here, The Knot rounds up every single celebrity engagement of 2019. (Prepare to swoon!)

1. Tim Tebow and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

Tim Tebow had to do one of his least favorite things—lie—in order to propose to his then-girlfriend Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, on January 10. But the former college football player would later say that it was all worth it. He and Nel-Peters first met through Night to Shine, part of his nonprofit, the Tim Tebow Foundation.

“Her sister has special needs, so we invited them to Night to Shine in South Africa,” he told Today hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb back in 2018. “We kind of met and started talking through that and haven’t stopped.”

2. Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger

Chris Pratt had Katherine Schwarzenegger’s parents’ approval long before he dropped to one knee to propose on January 13 (and in so doing gave us one of the most surprising celebrity engagements of 2019). In fact, Schwarzenegger’s mom, Maria Shriver, set the pair up in early 2018. By September, friends were calling the couple “a great fit” and anticipating a quick engagement. “Katherine has spent time with Chris’ family and they all love her too,” an insider told People at the time. “She fits in really well with them and vice versa.” They became Instagram official in December, and showed off a diamond sparkler by early January. By June, the couple wed in an intimate ceremony in California.

3. Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney

Everyone’s favorite red carpet gal linked up with her plus-one for life in January after quietly getting engaged to her boyfriend, art gallery dealer Cooke Maroney, at the start of the year. The Silver Linings Playbook actress and Maroney were first rumored to be dating back in June 2018, and largely kept their relationship under wraps ever since. On October 19, the couple wed in front of their loved ones in Rhode Island.

4. Jude Law and Phillipa Coan

Talk about an understated confirmation! Jude Law and his longtime girlfriend, psychologist Phillipa Coan, sparked rumors of an engagement early in the year, but it wasn’t until Coan stepped out with a blinding bauble on that finger in February that their engagement was confirmed. The couple married several months later in May in a simple courthouse wedding in London.

5. Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood

Supergirl star Melissa Benoist found her Superman in co-star Chris Wood, who proposed to the actress in early February with an oval-shaped diamond ring featuring a tiny halo of smaller diamonds. “Yes yes yes it will always be yes,” she captioned a shot of herself looking giddy while showing off the ring as Wood plants a kiss on her cheek. The pair have been linked since 2017.

6. Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

Katy Perry is officially off the market. The singer rekindled her romance with actor Orlando Bloom following a break in 2017 (the pair previously dated back in 2016 after meeting at the Golden Globes), and the reunion went so well the high-profile pair took their relationship to the next level, joining the slew of celebrity engagements in 2019 to delight at the tail end of proposal season. Bloom proposed to Perry on Valentine’s Day.

“I wouldn’t have imagined anything happening,” Bloom told The Times UK in 2018. “And, you know, when you get hit sideways you get hit sideways. You don’t pick who you fall in love with.”

7. Abbie Cornish and Adel Altamimi

Love was definitely in the air for Jack Ryan star Abbie Cornish and MMA fighter Adel Altamimi on Valentine’s Day. The pair, who had kept their relationship largely under wraps (it’s unclear how they met or how long they’d been dating), shared the happy news via social media just after the romantic holiday, with Cornish gushing about her man.

“There is so much more here in this pic,” she captioned a shot of the athlete. “I see a man that has evolved through this life in a way nobody I’ve ever met has. A warrior. A champion. A believer. A lover. I respect you so much. The light you see is the light you give.” The second photo in the series included a close-up shot of her new ring. “You’ve swept me off my feet my love. I have been waiting for you,” she continued. “The answer is yes!”

8. Brittany Snow and Tyler Stanaland

Brittany Snow usually has a thing about keeping her love life out of the public eye, but when it came to her beau Tyler Stanaland, she knew something was a little different. “I’m very public about it for the first time in my life and that’s very strange to me,” she told Us Weekly in the fall of 2018. “I made a conscious decision—I’m very private and I made a conscious decision to, I don’t know, be less hard on myself.” Then, earlier this year, Snow went full-force putting their relationship in the spotlight, announcing their engagement via Instagram on Feb. 19. “A couple weeks ago, I said ‘YES’ about a million times to the man of my wildest & most beautiful dreams,” she wrote.

9. Gabby Barrett and Cade Foehner

A love made in reality TV singing competition heaven. Gabby Barrett and Cade Foehner, who met during their respective runs on American Idol back in 2018, announced their surprise engagement toward the end of March—surprise because even Barrett thought it was something that might happen years down the line. But Foehner had other plans, planning out a proposal many months in advance. When he and Barrett were in Los Angeles visiting their pastor and taking part in pre-marital counseling in March, he popped the question during a photoshoot in the very room where they had first met. “Foehner has a nice RING to it… 💍💕,” she captioned a sweet shot of the pair kissing while she showed off her bling.

10. Issa Rae and Louis Diame

Talk about a subtle announcement. Fans of Issa Rae and her popular HBO series Insecure puzzled over whether or not the multi-hyphenate was engaged after she appeared on the cover of Essence magazine with dazzling ring on that finger, but it wasn’t until March when her costars confirmed that yes, Rae was indeed engaged. “We’re very excited for her,” Rae’s onscreen BFF Yvonne Orji told Entertainment Tonight at the NAACP Image Awards, adding that all of the costars heard the happy news at different times, but “the reaction was all the same, like, ‘You out here in these streets getting married, boo?!’ That was the reaction.” Diame is a businessman from Senegal.

11. Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola and Christian Biscardi

Is this real life? I’m so freaking happy for you,” Jenni “JWoww” Farley wrote in the comments. Added Angelina Pivarnick, who appeared on two seasons of the show, “FINALLY !!! Congrats love.”

12. Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez

Continuing with the plethora of celebrity engagements in 2019 thus far, superstar couple Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez (who collectively go by the nickname J-Rod) announced their relationship status update during a romantic trip to the Bahamas. The pair, who have been dating since early 2017, were on a relaxing getaway when Rodriguez decided the time and setting was just right for a proposal. “She said yes,” the former Yankees athlete captioned a close-up shot of Lopez’s impressive 16-carat engagement ring. Friends of the baseball player would later tell Page Six that Rodriguez spent months trying to find the exact perfect ring. “He wanted to get it right,” the source said. “The proposal has been a long time coming. Alex knew she was the one and has been painstakingly planning everything.”

13. Michelle Wie and Jonnie West

Michelle Wie and Jonnie West had just barely gone public with their relationship (they only made their relationship known in January) when they made the exciting announcement that they were, in fact, ready to make their way down the aisle. The golf pro shared a sweet image of West (son of NBA great Jerry West) down on one knee on March 10 with the perfect caption: “My person for life!” The pair surprised fans once again when they got married just months later in August.

The soccer stars first met back in 2010 when they both played for the U.S. National Team, and hit it off right away, becoming fast friends. “We always sat next to each other on the bus and on flights, and we kind of just talked about our dreams and our hopes and what we wanted to do one day when we grew up,” Harris told People. “Because at the time, we were kids.” The couple largely kept their relationship under wraps until they announced their engagement in March.
