Celebrity in Wichita teaching people with intellectual disabilities to train dogs

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Celebrity and Professional Animal Trainer Joel Silverman is working with Starkey, Inc. to teach people with intellectual disabilities how to train dogs.

Silverman hosted “Good Dog U” on Animal Planet from 1999 to 2009.

Silverman paired Kyle, Luis and Hannah with dogs for training he uses in his trainer courses so that they can, in turn, teach their family and friends who want those skills.

“I’m learning how to train dogs, and I’m having a lot of fun with it,” said Hannah Dykstra. “If I get a dog in the future, I can learn these techniques to help me.”

Silverman said he hopes the training will help them get jobs working with animals.
