Singleton was the first African American filmmaker to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar. He was also the youngest ever nominated, earning the nod at just 24. He would later go on to work in TV, which may be part of why he became such an enduring part of the entertainment landscape and fostered close friendships with so many people that he worked with. Many expressed sadness over the director's death on social media, posting tributes and remembrances.
