Celebrities Who Married at Home and Had Backyard Weddings
These A-listers may have the means to exchange vows anywhere in the world, but they chose to wed in their humble abodes. From Cameron Diaz to superstar singer Beyonce, here’s a list of celebrities who married at home–some, even, hosting lavish backyard weddings.
Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma
News broke Sunday, December 22, that Duff had married fiance Matthew Koma after only half a year of wedding planning. According to multiple outlets, Duff’s sister, actress Hayley Duff, had a hand in wedding planning.

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady
The superstar couple first exchanged vows in February 2009, inside a Santa Monica church before 20 guests. Several months after the ceremony, the pair held another intimate wedding in Bundchen’s Costa Rica home. “It’s nothing personal against anybody, but it’s not about them,” Brady later said in an interview with GQ. “It’s about what you and your wife need for that day.”

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves
Add McConaughey and Alves to the list of celebrities who married at home. The pair saw their home in Austin, Texas, as the perfect venue to bring their loved ones together in June 2012. They hosted a three-day wedding weekend celebration, which featured air conditioned tents, upscale food and entertainment.
The Oscar-winning actor revealed to Esquire in October 2016 that his wife grew impatient with his busy shooting schedule, and ended up planning the wedding on her own. The model simply gave her then-fiancee an invitation and said, “Be there.”
He showed up. Perhaps their sweetest wedding day moment was when McConaughey and his bride whispered secret vows to each other.
Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden
Diaz and Madden opted for a lavish ceremony in the backyard of Diaz’s Beverly Hills mansion. To help shield the private moment, the couple erected a huge tent and opted for an unplugged ceremony. Drew Barrymore and Madden’s sister, Nicole Richie, were bridesmaids, and the groom’s brothers, Josh and Joel Madden, served as groomsman.

After the Jewish nuptials, the newlyweds escaped to a private area for some alone time before returning to their 100 guests, according to Us Weekly.
Beyonce and Jay Z
These A-listers had endless options when they began planning their April 2008 wedding, but they ultimately settled on Jay Z’s New York City apartment.

Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, subsequently revealed that her daughter wasn’t the biggest fan of her wedding dress–which Lawson had designed. “She [came to me] and said, ‘You know, when my daughter gets married, I’m going to let her pick out her own dress.’ Maybe she wasn’t so excited about it at the time, but she’s a sweetheart,” Lawson told Today co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford in June 2016.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
DeGeneres has proven to be comfortable in front of a crowd, but she and de Rossi were intent on hosting an intimate, laid-back wedding at their Beverly Hills home in August 2008.
DeGeneres wore a white pantsuit by Zac Posen, and de Rossi donned a gorgeous, pink-and-white gown by the same designer.

Julia Roberts and Daniel Moder
Roberts and Moder invited friends and family over to their New Mexico ranch for a Fourth of July party in 2002. What their guests didn’t realize was that the duo would marry that very night.
Moder proposed to Roberts at midnight, and the duo didn’t waste any time becoming husband and wife.

Social that! In May 2012, Zuckerberg invited friends and family members to his home in Palo Alto, California. The purpose of the evening was believed to be a surprise party for Chan, who had just graduated from medical school. Guests, however, were shocked when they arrived: Zuckerberg and Chan had secretly planned an at-home wedding.

For their August 2014 wedding, Simpson and Ross chose to exchange vows at the groom’s mother Diana Ross’ Greenwich, Connecticut estate. Jessica Simpson served as matron of honor, and the bride’s son Bronx walked her down the aisle. Diana Ross officiated the ceremony and sang at the reception.
Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth
The powerhouse pair had the perfect wedding venue at their fingertips: Witherspoon’s 1920s-style ranch estate in Ojai, California.
