Celebrities Are Getting Their Red Carpet Glow From These Light Therapy Masks That You Can Easily Use At Home

While red carpet beauty trends come and go, there’s one skin care tool that’s been a mainstay in the routines of celebrity makeup artists and groomers: LED light therapy devices and red light therapy masks. We’ve seen countless pros use these skin care tools on their A-list clients — girls and guys included — throughout the 2024 awards season to give the stars the radiance they need to rock the red carpet.

At the Oscars alone, Cillian Murphy, Colman Domingo, Sandra Hüller, and Sterling K. Brown were prepped with LED light therapy tools — and based off their glowing skin, we’re sold on the ability of these red light therapy tools to impart healthy radiance in minutes. So what’s the secret behind these devices?
“Red light therapy is a low-level laser light therapy that exposes the skin to low wavelengths of light in order to address a number of skin concerns,” explains board-certified, New York City dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman previously told WWD for a story on red light therapy face tools. “The light causes cells to work more efficiently and regenerate and repair damage, without pain or downtime.” And while the brightening and line-softening benefits will only get better with consistent use, Dr. Engelman explains that “with at-home LED face masks, you might notice your complexion has an inner glow after use.”
For the 2024 awards show season, two LED light therapy brands have emerged as celebrity makeup artist and groomer favorites: Currentbody and Solawave. Celebrity hairstylist and groomer Gareth Bromell used the Currentbody LED Light Therapy Face Mask on Murphy for the Oscars as well as the Golden Globes. “I have a selection of male VIPs that I work with that love the extra glow the LED mask gives, so I use it every time,” Bromell explained in a press release.
Brown also received a Currentbody light therapy treatment ahead of the Oscars, with celebrity makeup artist Kathy Santiago pairing the tool with under eye patches to plump and hydrate the skin while helping to minimize fine lines. Celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles used the Currentbody Face and Neck Kit on Lily Gladstone for the SAG Awards, ensuring the actress’ face and decolléte looked fresh in her shoulder-baring dress. Another Currentbody fan? Dakota Johnson’s makeup artist Georgie Eisdell, who prepped the actress’ skin with the brand’s LED face mask ahead of the ‘Madame Web’ premiere on February 12.
For a more portable LED face mask, celebrity makeup artists and groomers reach for Solawave’s 4-in-1 Radiant Renewal Wand, a device that doubles as a facial massager to flush away puffiness (and pre-show jitters, at that!). Makeup artist Jo Baker used the tool on Hüller to get a head start on her complexion while hairstylist Danilo Dixon attended to the actress’ hair. “I used the time to do a little pampering — a simple face massage followed by 3 mins of red light therapy using the Solawave Radiant Renewal Wand,” Baker explained in a press release. “I am a HUGE devotee of light therapy devices and this one being the size of a toothbrush means anytime, anyplace, I can boost skin’s circulation, reduce puffiness and activate a healthy radiance with its warm vibrating galvanic magic.” Groomer Jamie Richmond used the tool on Domingo for the Oscars and groomer Candice Birns also wielded it for Charles Melton’s glowing complexion at the 2024 Golden Globes.
Elsewhere on the red carpets this awards season, we’ve seen celebrities like Brittany Snow radiate after professional LED light therapy treatments. To prep for the Oscars, Snow received a Kate Somerville facial that included LightStim LED light therapy. Julianne Moore has been spotted basking under LED light therapy panels during treatments by Fabricio Ormande, too.
