Celeb stylists reveal secrets behind the best 2024 Oscars red carpet looks

The 2024 Oscars red carpet was one for the fashion record books, with stunning stars like Carey Mulligan, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and previous Alexa cover star Anya Taylor-Joy decked out in couture creations, dripping in diamonds and making our best dressed list.

We asked three top celebrity stylists to weigh in on their 15 favorite looks from the night — from Old Hollywood classics to risky surprises. Below, they share the insider secrets behind why those ‘fits were such hits.

Meet the stylists:

Ashley Pruitt is the longtime stylist of Mark Consuelos and was onsite for this year’s Oscars. She’s worked with a host of other celebrity clients, including Diane Lane, Pedro Pascal, Janelle Monae, Brooke Shields, Lenny Kravitz, Neil Patrick Harris, Christie Brinkley and Paris Hilton.

Emma Pritchard is a New York-based fashion stylist originally from Wales, whose clients include Ellie Kemper and Camille Vasquez. As a long time Alexa contributor, she’s styled cover stars Lily James, Gemma Chan and Mads Mikkelsen, to name a few.

As the Deputy Fashion Editor of Alexa, Anahita Moussavian has styled countless cover stars, including Anya Taylor-Joy, J Balvin, Ashley Park, Regina King, Machine Gun Kelly, Joe Jonas, Shania Twain, Maluma and David Oyelowo. She frequently reviews major red carpets for The Post, including the Oscars and the Met Gala.

“Anya knows how to serve icon, but when I caught the slightest, waist-up-only glimpse of her on my TV screen tonight, I knew — I knew — her look was paying homage to the iconic ‘Junon’ dress designed by Christian Dior for his fall/winter 1949/1950 collection. Also known as My Favorite Dress Ever. The layering upon layering of sparkly petals! That sculpted strapless bustier! Heavenly! “This is such a rock-star, punk-head look and I love it — from the beaded piping on the jacket to the deep V-neck shirt and wide-leg pants. And the pink sock thing is epic! It’s a screw-you attitude — like he’s trying to show Barbie what she missed! He’s gone from sweet Ken to the Ramones Ken. Which makes sense, since he later performed at the Oscars. “I was praying we’d get a Giambattista Valli look and who better than Ari to bring the drama? Her massively oversized marshmallow sleeves are the ideal companion to the custom, strapless column gown, accented with Tiffany & Co. jewels. Ariana’s clearly giving us a sneak-preview of what to expect in the next year as she promotes her turn as Glinda the Good Witch in the “Wicked” film adaptation. “There is so much to love about Colman’s glam look designed by Louis Vuitton — he literally shone. The sparkly buttons on the blazer! The flared pants! A bow tie decorated with a bejeweled brooch! “Kirsten has always been a leader of not trying so hard. It’s a real New Yorker attitude — nonchalant confidence. ‘I’m just going to throw on this simple dress and walk out the door and show off my body.’ It was a risk — just throwing on a slip dress with spaghetti straps — but she looks beautiful. It’s stunning minimalism, and not always what you’d expect from Gucci either. “It’s so nice to see an original take on a shawl-collar tuxedo — and wow, can the ‘American Fiction’ Best Supporting Actor nominee pull it off. Sterling’s stylist, Chloe Keiko Takayanagi, explained that she wanted to keep the look classic, but add a special element, which was a scarf shawl that’s actually removable, inspired by past Kim Jones’ Dior collections from spring 2020. I also think the elegant, 1919 Boucheron ‘Barette’ brooch, with platinum-set diamonds and sapphires over a pocket square, is such a lovely touch. The very definition of debonair.” — Emma Pritchard

“Watching Margot Robbie turn up on the red carpet for her ‘Barbie’ press tour has been the most delightful sartorial experience. Shout out to her stylist Andrew Mukamal for all of those Barbie outfit homages! I don’t think I’ve ever eagerly anticipated an Oscars look as much as I have Margot’s. Did I gasp out loud when I saw our beloved Stereotypical Barbie dressed in black? Yes. But was I also obsessed with the way that black chainmail Atelier Versace from the label’s fall 2024 line flawlessly hugged her body? Y-E-S. “Nyong’o has never met a sparkle or feather that she didn’t like — or that didn’t land her on top of a best-dressed list. “While coolly posing for photographers on Hollywood’s most prestigious night, Billie Eilish (whose “What Was I Made For?” won for Best Song) schooled us all in what it means to march to the beat of your own sartorial drum. She’s recently been on a prep-inspired, menswear-infused spree, posing on red carpets in varsity jackets, oversized blazers, skinny ties and midi-length khaki skirts. “I’ll be honest, I previously wasn’t familiar with Ludwig (who won Best Original Score for ‘Oppenheimer’), but when I saw his look, it stopped me in my tracks. I’m obsessed with it! I love the retro ’70s vibe with the wide pant leg, the satin kimono collar, the velvet loafers and the pin in his jacket. Look at you, Zegna, getting out of the box with this look. “I love the ease and clever accessorizing of this custom Fendi tuxedo. The no-shirt man cleavage has been a big trend on the red carpet, a nod to Simu’s Barbie ‘Ken 2’ character. “I’ve been working with Mark for almost nine years — he’s the most chic, classic, sophisticated, handsome man. This is the first time he was co-hosting the after-Oscars special (with wife Kelly Ripa), and we knew there was only one designer we could turn to — Tom Ford.
