CCE Steuben to give away container garden kits

STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — Steuben County residents interested in starting a container garden can attend one of the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Steuben County’s container garden giveaway events.

Over the next two weeks, the CCE is holding three garden kit giveaways around Steuben County. Residents can pick up a kit to start their own garden for free after filling out a contact and household information form.

Each garden kit contains the following: five fabric grow bags, potting soil, seeds, tomato plants, pepper plants, granular fertilizer, watering and gardening tools, growing instructions, and educational materials.

The kits will be given away at the Victory Highway Church, located at 150 Victory Highway in Painted Post, on Thursday, May 23; the Rehoboth Ministry, located at 112 East Ave. in Hornell, on Wednesday, June 5; and 16 E. William St. in Bath on Thursday, June 6. Each giveaway event will last from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and there will be 100 kits available at each location.

The CCE will be holding education and nutrition classes to help people maintain their gardens and learn how to use the produce they grow. Those interested in taking these classes should visit the CCE of Steuben County’s website or Facebook page for information about upcoming classes as it’s posted.
