Cat Mom Makes Adorable 'Adidas' Dupe Sandals for Her Kitty From Her Own Fur

This time of year, my cats shed like crazy. It almost turns into a game to see how big the fur ball gets every time I brush them—a few days ago I was sure I amassed enough hair to make an entirely new cat. My vacuum trembles at the prospect of every run across my carpet. My lint roller joined the witness protection program.

But I’ve never thought to do anything with all the fur I collect. It just goes right into the garbage. Am I missing out on getting creative with what is apparently my most abundant renewable resource?

This cat mom doesn’t let her own feline’s fur go to waste. Instead, in this video, she uses the sheddings to make some adorable kitty sandals that wouldn’t look out of place in a shop. In fact, they look exactly like the perennially popular Adidas Adilette slides.

The original Adilette slides were designed in 1970 for a German World Cup soccer team looking for a comfortable sandal to wear in a locker room shower. They have a supportive, molded footbed of foam and bottom traction making them easy to wear outside of the bathroom as well.

And though the cat-fur version copies the style of the slide more than its specs, that doesn’t make the little ones any less cute.

How To Make Sandals From Cat Fur

In order to make her cat fur sandals, first, she brushed the kitty with a soft-bristled rubber comb designed to catch and mat cat fur. These kind of brushes are meant to be particularly gentle on a cat’s sensitive skin, as well as gather the fur together on the bristles so it’s easily disposable after the grooming session. What it does is create a single, solid mat of the fur—but this mat can also form he basis of craft projects.

After she pulled the matted gray fur off the end of the brush, she cut out the shapes of the sandal bed and the strap, and carefully glued them together. Then, to complete that “Adidas” look, she glued on a trio of white strips to the strap.

Finally, she slipped the tiny sandals onto her cats feet. Did the animal actually deign to wear them around? Well, if cats I know are any indication, they aren’t wild about clothes—especially anything that covers up their feet. But that’s hardly the point.

What Else To Do With Cat Fur

This woman isn’t the only one finding creative uses for her animal’s sheddings. Lots of folks have realized that there are further uses for the fur their pet drops all over the house. I have one friend who puts pet hair in the compost. Others have been known to spin the fur into yarn and even make sweaters out of it.

Though many places will encourage you to put your pet hair out for birds to use as nesting material, this is actually not recommended by ornithological experts, for several reasons. If your pet’s hair has been treated with flea and tick medicine, this could be toxic for baby birds. Additionally, some pet hair will retain water, or get tangled around delicate baby bird bodies, causing death.

Better stick to fun crafts like this one.
