Cat Finally Reunites with Family After Surviving for Months After Maui Wildfires

It's a happy day for one pet owner in Maui, who was reunited with their cat after more than a year apart. The cat, Mahina, was lost after wildfires tore through Hawaii. Miraculously, the cat was both found and reunited with her owners earlier this week.

It seems almost impossible to believe, but after surviving 100 days in the burn zone Mahina finally went home.

All really had seemed lost. According to a TikTok from CBS Evening News, Mahina's family moved to Montana after the fires ravaged their family home. Mahina's family had pretty much given up hope that they'd ever find her again.

But the 3-year-old managed to stay alive despite the circumstances. Mahina was recently found by the MHS' Fire Task Force in Hawaii trapping team and her owners were located through the cat's microchip, the Maui Humane Society explained in a post on Facebook.

"Needless to say, they were overjoyed to learn that Mahina was a survivor," the post states.

Mahina's journey didn't end there, however. It took "a village" to get Mahina back to her owners. The cat had to be flown to the mainland, despite an oncoming snowstorm.

"MHS covered the cost of Mahina's health certificate and travel, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines made sure she was safe and sound in her flight, and a trusted transporter brought her from Seattle to Montana," the statement reads.

Maui Humane Society also shared a statement from Mahina's owner, who seemed absolutely thrilled to have their best friend home.

"Mahina is doing soooo so good," they said. "She is a happy kitty and loves to play with her feather toy and watch TV with us. She stays strictly inside now, but since we are in Montana, she hasn't wanted to go outside because of the snow! She's so goofy and is so happy to be home with her parents!"

People online were thrilled to see that Mahina made her way home. "This is the news I want to hear," wrote one person, before adding a crying emoji. "Mahina has some stories to tell to her family! So happy she’s home," another commenter added. "This is why I sent money to this very humane society after fire!!!" one person exclaimed. "Cats always come back we see it after hurricanes earthquakes. They come back months later," a third person pointed out.

We guess that's why they say cats have nine lives!
