In season seven of Outlander, Claire and Jamie find themselves far from Scotland in North Carolina in the 1770s. Claire doesn't have much use for fancy gowns this season and Jamie doesn't wear a kilt quite as often now that he's in the new world. Instead, they're preparing for the imminent revolution.
Here's what the cast (from this season and earlier seasons) looks like in the 21st century, as they settle in to Fraser's Ridge and America teeters on the brink of a war.
Claire Randall Fraser: Caitriona Balfe
Dublin-born Balfe got her start as a model and worked with Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and countless others. That might explain her red-carpet excellence.
Jamie Fraser: Sam Heughan
When Heughan was cast as Jamie, Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander books, said, "That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart. Having seen Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie, I feel immensely grateful to the production team for their painstaking attention to the soul of the story and characters."
Brianna Randall Fraser: Sophie Skelton
Though she plays Claire and Jamie's American-born-and-bred daughter, Skelton is from Cheshire, England.
Lord John Grey: David Berry
Berry is another Outlander star doing an accent: He is Australian. He's also someone you might see a lot more of. The books' author Diana Gabaldon wrote an entire series for his character, Lord John Grey, and given the popularity of Outlander, it's possible we might see it televised as well.
Fergus Fraser: César Domboy
Domboy is a 28-year-old French actor.
Marsali MacKimmie Fraser: Lauren Lyle
The English-born actress plays Fergus's companion, and the daughter of Claire's one-time nemesis (and Jamie's lover) Laoghaire, played by Nell Hudson, though Lyle and Hudson are just two years apart in age. "We’re almost the same age, and she’s my mom!" Lyle said of that pairing.
Roger MacKenzie: Richard Rankin
One of the cast's resident Scots, Rankin was born in Glasgow.
Ian Fraser Murray: John Bell
Bell is a Scottish born 21-year-old actor who has been acting since he was 10 years old.
Stephen Bonnett: Ed Speleers
Speleers played Edward Seymour in Wolf Hall and Slean in Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands, but he's best as Jimmy Kent, an ambitious 1920s footman in the latter seasons of Downton Abbey.
Jacosta Cameron: Maria Doyle Kennedy
Jamie's Aunt Jacosta is played by Kennedy, a Dublin-born actress whom audience members of a certain age may remember from an early role in The Commitments. She's had roles in Orphan Black, The Tudors, and played Bates's villainous first wife Vera in Downton Abbey.
Frank Randall: Tobias Menzies
You may also recognize Menzies from that other muddy, violent, sexy show we can't stop watching. (Or his turn as Prince Philip in season three of The Crown.)
And yes, Menzies played Frank's repulsive ancestor, Black Jack, as well. He was also cast as Prince Philip in seasons 3 and 4 of The Crown.
Murtagh Faser: Duncan Lacroix
Fans may be shocked to discover that the man behind Murtagh is a sassenach, hailing from Kent.
Dougal Mackenzie: Graham McTavish
This isn't the first role that required McTavish to grow a full beard; he also played the dwarf Dwalin in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy.
Colum MacKenzie: Gary Lewis
You may remember Lewis as the dad in Billy Elliot.
Rupert MacKenzie: Grant O'Rourke
You clean up nice, O'Rourke.
Janet "Jenny" Fraser Murray: Laura Donnelly
Jenny is full of Scottish pride, so you'd never know Donnelly hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Geillis Duncan: Lotte Verbeek
Verbeek is Dutch, but she's played Scottish, Italian (in The Borgias), and Hungarian (in Agent Carter). We'll miss your mysterious ways, Geillis.
Laoghaire MacKenzie: Nell Hudson
Hudson plays awkward and manipulative beautifully. (Bonus points if you can pronounce "Laoghaire" correctly.)
Glenna FitzGibbons: Annette Badland
How many hours in the makeup chair did this take?
Phaedre: Natalie Simpson
Born and raised in Nigeria, Simpson worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company before joining the Outlander ranks.
