*Warning: Spoilers ahead*
In the This Is Us season four premiere, we met not one, not two, but a horde of new faces. Although it was unclear how the new characters fit into the Pearson family story line in the beginning, all was revealed by the close of the episode. Still, fans of the series have a couple of theories about what part Cassidy Sharp (Jennifer Morrison) will eventually play in the Pearsons’ lives.
We first meet Cassidy at the beginning of the episode when she’s stationed in the Middle East as a Marine. Once she’s discharged and sent back home, she struggles to acclimate and shows signs of PTSD. After she snaps and hits her young son, her husband throws her out and she eventually seeks help at the VA. While attending a support group meeting, she shares her story and is alarmed when a drunken Uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne) throws a chair through the window.
As we learn later in the episode, Uncle Nicky is arrested and calls Kevin (Justin Hartley) to post bail. Sure, the fact that Cassidy happens to go to the same VA that Nicky resents is a tie-in, but something tells us the This Is Us writers have something more intriguing up their sleeves. Here are three popular theories.
Theory One: Cassidy Is Jack’s Love Child
Yeah, this one threw us for a loop, too. There’s some chatter that perhaps Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) fathered a child while in Vietnam or before he got together with Rebecca (Mandy Moore). Some fans are speculating that he could have had a daughter with the woman from the Vietnam episode and that he asked Uncle Nicky to keep it a secret, which is why he’s always stayed away from the family. We’re hoping this one is false.
Theory Two: Cassidy Is Kevin’s Eventual Baby Mama
We don’t necessarily mind this theory. In the season three finale, we learn that Kevin eventually has a son and that his kid looks a bit like his ex-girlfriend Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge). You know who also kind of looks like Sophie? Cassidy. In the episode three teaser, they appear to meet at the VA as Kevin tries to help rehabilitate Uncle Nicky. Maybe they hit it off, bond over their shared demons and ultimately have a child together. Crazier things have happened on This Is Us.
Theory Three: Cassidy Is Nicky’s Daughter
OK, hear us out. When Nicky throws the chair through the window in the season four premiere, there’s a moment where he and Cassidy lock eyes and he takes a swig of whiskey. Sure, we’d take a long hard look at someone who threw a piece of furniture through our window, but some are speculating that the weighted look between them means they recognize each other and that Cassidy is his daughter. The verdict’s still out on this one.
Our favorite family drama returns with season four, episode three next Tuesday, October 8, at 9 p.m. PT/ET. Hopefully we’ll get more insight on the Cassidy situation.
