Who really buys a mattress in the store anymore? Thanks to more direct-to-consumer brands, buying something you’ve never tried or seen IRL before is the new norm. A lot of this change in consumer behavior comes from the rise in reading online reviews.

As someone who has been testing mattresses for years—this year alone I’ve slept on four completely different models—I have strong feelings about how these reviews should be reported. It isn’t just about the product and a few night's of experience anymore, it’s also about the person. This is something commerce editors, like me, need to be more transparent about. I’m a woman who likes a soft and fluffy mattress and I’m aware that’s not everyone’s preference. But I still have a job to do. What I do know is the science behind the business. From the construction and materials needed to make these things, to the way they're built, and value per dollar that you’re given, I've spent years studying who makes what, and who makes them best.

In addition to the technicalities, I also have a partner who prefers a hard and firm mattress, so again, it isn't just all about me—and finding our compromise mattress is a common problem we, and most, face. Coming at it from all these angles helps me give a true and honest opinion that goes beyond just my preference.

Now that I’m talking honestly, I'll address my most asked question: Casper vs Saatva? Which brand really makes the better mattress?

Both of these are major players in the mattress industry for great reasons. You know Casper as the first mattress-in-a-box type. Since its launch in 2014, the whole space has blown up and the brand has gained a lot of competitors. But in my opinion very few do it better than Casper. Then we have Saatva, founded in 2011, its also no stranger to the direct-to-consumer business. In fact, the brand was one of the first. Its concept isn't based off boxed mattresses that arrive at your doorstep, it's more about luxury and white-glover delivery service (more on that later).

I recently tested two of the brand's newest models, the Casper Snow and the Saatva Foam Hydrib. Neither of these are my first try Casper or Saatva, giving me a deeper insight into how each brand performs. Here's the full breakdown.

I recently tested two of the brand's newest models: the Casper Snow and the Saatva Foam Hybrid. Neither of these are my first try from Casper or Saatva, giving me a deeper insight into how each brand performs. Here's my full breakdown.

Snow Mattress

I'll be frank: I really love everything Casper does. While the less expensive models the brand offers, that are just made up of a full-foam construction, aren't my favorite, it really shines is with its hybrid models. The Casper Snow is based off the same concept as its other hybrid models, the Nova and the Wave, which are made up of multiple layers of supportive coils topped off with a soft pillow top.

The hybrid models really stand out to me because they tend to be favored even by those who thought they liked only firmer mattresses. So this model isn't just great for me, but it also works for my partner who really likes more firm choices. He's happy with the thicker, more "firm" support this offers, while I still feel happy with the plush, almost sink-in like top. (While he normally hates those, on this mattress he does not. I have never found another mattress that we agree on more.)

Sure, if I was alone, I'd have something more plush, and he would have something more firm. But this is the compromise that solves the debate in our house.

Lastly, what it does best: Keep you cool. I'll be real, there is a lot of hype around cooling sleep products these days, and I call B.S. on most of them. Not in this case. Since owning this mattress, I sweat a lot less throughout the night.

After testing four mattresses this year, I won't be moving on from this one anytime soon. It's a winner for those who are hot, want something both supportive and plush, and it's ideal for the couple who likes different things. What else could anyone need?

Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress

I was very excited to try this mattress. Saatva truly makes exceptional products and offers exceptional service. Plus, this model is just my type: A hybrid. It offers layers of support topped off by a foam topping for extra comfort. What could go wrong?

For me, it just wasn't plush enough. I still want a little bit of bounce and cloud-like sensation on top. If it were up to my partner though, we would have kept this mattress. It was much more suited to his tastes. So, while we did end up trading this model in for something we both would enjoy, I have nothing but strong recommendations for it if you're looking for something with support. And don't get me wrong, this thing isn't as hard as a rock; it still has bounce, just not at the level I enjoy.

Where Saatva really shines is its aforementioned service. You can test their options in the store, and while Casper also has stores, I feel Saatva offers a more traditional mattress shopping destination. On top of that, pretty much every model they sell ships and delivers extremely fast. This is a feat because it's not just a box shipped via UPS-style like a Casper, this is a freight delivery service. Actual delivery men bring it in white-glove style: they set it up on your bed frame and can even remove your old mattress. You don't have to lift a finger.

If you're looking for a more traditional shopping experience, over a boxed option, you can't go wrong here. Read another review on one of its best-selling models here.
