Major star-studded events don’t happen that often in San Francisco, so when hundreds of the city’s most fashionable, technological, and artistic denizens walked into Pier 48 for Cartier’s party celebrating the Santos de Cartier watch, they were slack-jawed. It was a who’s who of some of Hollywood’s finest, with Jake Gyllenhaal, Sienna Miller, Idris Elba, Lisa Bonet, Freida Pinto, and more. People just kept walking around asking each other, “Can you believe this?”

Cartier hosted a dinner prior to the bash for editors and influencers (who also took a trip to Napa for lunch with Sofia Coppola the day before). On Thursday night, the event transformed the pier with elaborate, flashing light displays and a warren of rooms and nooks. Hot Chip took the stage around 10:00 p.m. and got the crowd going, while Phoenix sent them into a frenzy. Then Jamie xx closed the show. “The last party like this was the Spotify launch party seven years ago,” said one San Francisco socialite of Sean Parker’s epic throw down in 2011 featuring Snoop Dogg and Jane’s Addiction. “It’s like an eclipse. See you in seven years.”
