Carol Burnett’s Wild ‘All My Children’ Story Will Have Soap Opera Fans Laughing out Loud

As a legend in Hollywood, Carol Burnett has made people laugh on and off-camera. She did just that on Live With Kelly and Mark, regaling the co-hosts with a story that had everyone in the room cracking up.

The actress appeared on the ABC daytime show on March 25 to promote her new series Palm Royale, and Kelly Ripa pointed out how Carol recurred over the years as Verla Grubbs on All My Children. When Kelly (who starred on the soap as well with her husband and co-host Mark Consuelos) brought up the TV flex, she decided to ask Carol how she found herself loving the drama.

"It started with my kids and they would watch, you know, at noon," Carol explained. "I said, 'What are you guys doing?' I sat down and I started to watch and I got hooked."

Carol elaborated how her obsession with All My Children expanded to something even she didn't expect. She shared a tale of vacationing with her family in Europe one summer, and she was so invested in the workings of the soap opera, she came up with a unique way to keep up with the show while not having access to her television.

"My husband and my kids were gonna go on a trip this one summer... This was before they had VCRs or TiVo or anything," she shared. "I thought, 'How am I going to last if I don't know what's going on in Pine Valley?' So I had a friend of mine, he sent me a telegram to every hotel on Friday to the concierge to bring me up to date on what was going on. A recap."

Although the request seemed completely normal to Carol and her friend, when she stayed in a hotel in Lake Como, Italy, her way of keeping up with the show led to a hilarious reaction from the concierge who received the telegram.

"There was a knock at the door around two o'clock in the morning. We opened the door and it was the manager of the hotel and he was shaking. He had this telegram," Carol said, leaving Kelly and Mark cracking up. "I wrote down what the telegram said: 'Erica is still in a coma. Mark slipped again and ran away from rehab. Mona has to have exploratory surgery — doesn't look good. Chuck has learned that Donna, who's carrying his baby, was once a hooker. Hope you're having a great trip.'"

Just like Kelly and Mark, it was no surprise that Carol's wild tale of being hooked on All My Children had viewers laughing on social media. "She is an ICON!!! And that story is iconic. Gotta love AMC 😂," one person wrote on Instagram. "AMC had us all in a chokehold. 😂," another agreed. "That is the best and funniest story!!! 😂," a different follower added.
