Carmelo Anthony Announces NBA Retirement After 19 Seasons

Carmelo Anthony is hanging up his jersey.

The NBA forward made the huge announcement that he's officially retiring after 19 seasons in a social media video uploaded to Instagram on May 22.

"I remember the days when I had nothing," the 38-year-old said while reflecting on his career, as throwback game snippets flashed on an old-school television set. "Just a ball on the court and a dream of something more."

The NYC native noted that "basketball was my outlet," before continuing: "My purpose was strong, my communities, the cities I represent with pride and the fans that supported me along the way, I am forever grateful for those people and places because they made me Carmelo Anthony."

The stellar athlete was first drafted into the league in 2003, after leading his team to a national championship at Syracuse University.

Now, the 10-time NBA All Star—who's played for the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trailblazers, and most recently, the Los Angeles Lakers—is making a "bittersweet" move and stepping into a new chapter.

"The time has come for me to say goodbye to the court where I made my name," he said, adding, "to the game that gave me purpose and pride."

Looking forward to the future, he shared his excitement for what's to come while discussing what's most important to him.

"When people ask what I believe my legacy is, it's not my feats on the court that come to mind, nor the awards or praise," he noted, making clear that his "story has always been more than basketball."

In the clip, the star can be seen holding a picture of a young girl, believed to be his daughter, and one of his son, 16-year-old Kiyan, whom he shares with TV personality, actress and ex-wife LaLa Anthony (formerly Vasquez).

As a young and talented budding basketball star himself, the pro athlete addressed his son personally, with a message to persevere. "The time has come for you to carry this torch," he said. "Chase your dreams. Let nothing hold you back. Let nothing intervene."

"My legacy, now and forever, lives on through you. And I'll always be proud of all that you do. Peace," he wrapped up the announcement, before saluting toward the camera and walking off-screen.

"LEGEND," several fans in the comments commended, while one mourned the "End of an era."
